4. sometimes you can't help it...
you just start talking like that. When I was in Kuwait, I was shocked to hear myself start talking like our Pakistani cable guys...it just happens.

I even did it yesterday when I went to get my eyebrows threaded. The lady is from India...

That pulls the hair cleanly out of its follicle. Relatively new in the States.

22. Here's some info on it.....
Eyebrow threading is a depilation technique which originated in India, although it is also widely practiced in the Middle East. Salons in Western nations offered the service to Middle Eastern clients for decades before European and American women became interested and the popularity of eyebrow threading skyrocketed. The hair removal technique is not just for the eyebrows: threading can be used to remove other facial and body hair as well.

The technique is sometimes listed on salon menus as khite or fatlah, which are both Arabic words for threading. Eyebrow threading involves twisting a piece of thread, usually cotton, into a double strand. This double stranded thread is used to pick up a line of hair and then remove it, creating a very clean, precise hairline. Eyebrow threading is the technique preferred by Indian movie stars, who are often distinguished by their crisp brow lines.

Eyebrow threading can be used to eliminate a unibrow, raise the arch of the eyebrow, or add shape and definition to the brow. Because it removes hair by the follicle, it is a reasonably long lasting hair removal technique as well. Repeat visits after three to four weeks are standard. The technique is also not terribly expensive because it is easy to do quickly and does not require costly chemical ingredients. For women who would like to pursue a more natural beauty regimen, eyebrow threading is a good choice, since it does not use harmful products.

Eyebrow threading is a preferred hair removal technique for a number of reasons. Unlike tweezing or plucking, eyebrow threading removes one clean line of hair all at once, making it much quicker and easier to shape the brows. Eyebrow threading also will not harm the skin like wax and some depilatory creams can. If done correctly, the skin should not be red or irritated for more than a few minutes after the eyebrow threading session. Some aestheticians also find it easier to shape eyebrows using this technique than other methods available.

3. It's not like Obama is making up some fake unique accent that nobody else has.
My husband and I (both northerners all our lives) just moved to SC, and we catch ourselves unwittingly mimicking the speech patterns of those people we've met and liked. Just saying that I don't think he's doing it on purpose. :D

It takes me a few hours to revert back to saying "upair" for "up there," pronouncing "aisle" "isle" and "owl" the same way and just running everything together. I feel sorry for my poor husband when he has to ask me to translate lol. I only speak that way when I'm there or when I'm around someone who is from there. Pittsburghese :D

Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 03:46 PM by zidzi
like Southerners! So what?! I really didn't notice any difference in Obama's speech. I learned Spanish when I lived in San Diego too. Some are just more adept at picking up accents and langauges..gets boring to speak the same all the time..for me, anyway.

bush is in another league..doesn't having ANY endearing qualities.

Edit to add~ When I lived on Kauai for 6 years I was speaking local and picking up Hawaiian..it's FUNB-)

9. I Think Obama is speaking fine.....
When you grow up like him, it is actually more natural to have various different tones depending.

One's manner of speaking is based on one's experience....and OBama has been from Hawaii, to Los Angeles and then on to New York. To the south side of Chicago, and the choirs of the Black churches, Then on to Harvard, and lastly, to the halls of congress. He is what we call diverse. Criticizing him for his life experience and how it manifests itself is a cheap trick.

Sounding like a Black Preacher by some....at certain times.

Why did Obama speak in a preacher accent during yesterday's speech?
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 06:25 PM by Herman Munster
Was that a deliberate attempt to make him look like Martin Luther King? Previously that accent was only a "South Carolina special" reserved for black churches there. It's the first time I've heard him use it with white audiences.

Sorry but for months I was called every name in the book for daring to support Hillary with just about 0 Obama supporters standing up to the bullying. I was called a faggot, a racist, and a whole lot else. Sorry, but it is damn hard not to mention the utter, total, and complete hypocrisy that Obama supporters are now engaged in. I am voting for the man and will canvas for him too but I won't forget, for a hell of a long time, the horrid behavior to which I was subjected on this website with literally no one apologizing.

6. I will never think of this forum the same again
at this point I couldn't care less about Obama. I will vote for him, we have an open gov race here and a Senate race. They will take my time, my money, and my passion. I will vote for Obama only because I am already in the booth. His supporters, his dishonest campaign, and his repeated snubs of gays have irrevocably turned me off. If not for the gay forum and the recovery forum I would be long gone from DU thanks entirely to Obama supporters.

I call that "being comfortable in his own skin" (I use that expression regarding myself - "being comfortable in my own skin")

And that is how I view his different way of expressing himself - he is comfortable enough to do it - which makes me wonder if he doesn't feel more comfortable about the way his campaign and this election is going.....
