Poll: Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama
WASHINGTON (AP) — Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them "lazy," "violent," responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.

1. That's why we need to talk to every single voter out there
Register new voters, make sure they vote. We can win this without bigot votes.

4. AP's concern is noted.
Meanwhile Obama is kicking ass in 97% Caucasian Maine, despite his horrendous 'problem' with white voters.

5. this for a man who graduated at the TOP of his class....
at Harvard. ARE white people that fucking stupid? Anyone who would harbor those thoughts and vote for a stupid old white man like Grampa Johnny are truly the ones who are "lazy," "violent," and responsible for their own troubles.

6. Why did this poll only focus on Democratic voters?
Because the M$M is STILL attempting to divide Democrats, using race as a weapon. Don't fall for it. Yes, there are racists in the Democratic party but we cannot allow it to keep us from working hard to do what we need to in order to get young people energized.

7. I dunno about the "Dem" part, but the racism is real
I had my first face-to-face encounter with actual overt racism today. We were sent by the Obama campaign to Michigan, to a smallish city which I will not name, for canvassing. We stopped at one house and asked if Mr. X was in. The younger man said to wait one minute and he would get the voter for us. Since we were wearing Obama stickers, it was clear what we were there for. Mr. X, a seventy-something man, seemed like he couldn't wait to talk to us. I greeted him by name with a smile, introduced myself, and and began a version of the script. The response threw us back on our heels, quite literally: "I wouldn't vote for that n*gger if you paid me a million dollars. That piece of sh*t c**n stands up there in Denver and lies and people just clap! Says his white granparents brought him up in Kansas. My ass. N*gger lies...." Well, I can't even go on. We interrupted him, looked him straight in the eye and said: "it's clear you won't be voting for Obama, so goodbye." No longer a need to be polite. It bummed us out for a few hours. We felt personally violated.

There were a number of people we met whom we suspected did not want to vote for a black man, but they had the decency at least to know it is socially unacceptable to say why they would not be voting for him. In a strange way, I actually appreciate that: they at least are ashamed of their views. We were not the only canvaassers who came back with a story like this. It was rare, but it was real and virulent.

8. Skeptism is starting in reference to this "poll'.
My colleague David Paul Kuhn, a serious poll junkie, has an interesting catch:

The AP study also seems to have been conducted among a population of Democrats more skeptical of Obama than normal. While both the ABC News /Washington Post polls and the massive weekly summaries of the Gallup Poll show that since late August between 83 and 85 percent of Democrats say they will vote for Obama, the AP study interviewed a population where only seven in 10 Democrats said they support Obama.
