Obama: NO BLANK CHECK!
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 01:05 PM by knowledgeispwr
At the rally in Charlotte, NC going on right now, Obama just said "No Blank Check!" for the financial crisis and the tax payers shouldn't be expected to hand out huge checks to CEOS (paraphrasing the last part).

The crowd went wild!

GOBAMA!

Turn North Carolina Blue!

Edited to remove the link to the rally, because it was a live-feed. Hopefully when someone finds a link to the video, they can post it.

1. I yelled, too!
He is our only hope right now. He is saying exactly what I want to hear, as someone who is very apprehensive right now.

2. Obama's instincts have been pretty terrific to date.
And today looks like more of the same.

And yes, let's win North Carolina.

4. Again, I'm very impressed.
I'm so used to out-of-touch politicians. It's nice to have someone with their finger right on the pulse of the average American. God, it's refreshing!

7. I agree -- and he's tying it to de-regulation
and brought it home to health care and insurance companies.

Health care, the financial crisis, job creation....good themes.

11. Watching CNN this morning ....
One might think Obama has spent the last week studying Marx and eating babies ....

Ya gotta love Wolf Blitzer's blithe cheerleading for the GOP .... Always a straight face ....

15. LOL! Wolf is a real mess, isn't he?
I think Regis Philbin could conduct a more insightful interview than Blitzer.

6. I like what I'm hearing on this one.. NOW, is the time that they need to stand up
and make sure it happens.. Don't hand them total control of us... also liked how he said this isn't the time for panic and worry.. use our heads and face up to the challenges.. We will avoid a depression the best we can..

and said you guys better read the fine print, let's not have an Economic Patriot Act of 2008!!

Good that he is coming out against a blank check. They better have some serious strings tied to this goddamn bailout.

12. If Nancy Pelois describes a bill as a "compromise"...
...then Obama will probably support it, like he did the FISA bill.

It's up to Nancy Pelosi to stand up to Bush or cave.

If Pelosi caves, nearly all the Republicans will vote for her bill and so will enough Democrats to pass it (even if it's a minority of Democrats.)

We'll see where the candidates - Obama and McLame - REALLY stand on economic solutions, equity, and fairness.

Watch McLame get boxed in by his conservative darwinistic "you're on your own" trickle-down pain philosophy.

Check out the "fix" Obama is proposing ---

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn’t be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fifth, this is a global crisis, and the United States must insist that other nations join us in helping secure the financial markets.

Sixth, we need to start putting in place the rules of the road I’ve been calling for for years to prevent this from ever happening again.

17. Re "taxpayers...should be able to recoup this investment."
The whole idea of the Bush Administration plan is for corporations to trade bad investments for cash.

If the investments were valuable, they could be re-sold in the private sector instead of selling them to the government.

Obama seems to be implying that the $700 billion is money we'll get back, when we won't.

24. The problem is we don't know the real current or future value of these investments.
The message Obama is sending today is he will not support the blank check "bailout" solution unless there are serious strings in place. It will be fascinating to watch this play out, in terms of policy and politics.

22. LINK to position brief: Obama's '4 basic principles' for any financial bailout plan:
I really see FIVE principles, not 4, and IMO principle #4 may be the dealbreaker.

From http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/gGgmmL

(1) "For too long, this Administration has been willing to hit the fast forward button in helping distressed Wall Street firms while pressing pause when it comes to saving jobs or keeping families in their homes. Swift and unprecedented action to shore up Wall Street must come alongside equally swift and serious efforts to help struggling families on Main Street, create new jobs, and grow our middle-class once more."

(2) "Extraordinary steps must be designed with only the public good in mind, not to enhance the personal gain of CEOs and management at taxpayers' expense."

(3) The "plan must be temporary and coupled with tough new oversight and regulations of our financial institutions. There must be a clear process to wind down this plan and restore private sector assets into private sector hands after restoring stability to the system."

(4) "Taxpayers must share in any upside benefit that such stability brings."

(5) "Finally, this plan should be part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20. We are facing a global financial crisis and the United States can take a leadership role in coordinating a global response to the present crisis, as well as greater regulatory cooperation and alignment to prevent future crises."

28. Much better than the "drill baby drill" meme or "trickle down economics"
I was just befuddled to hear someone say on a call-in to Washington Journal that the way to solve the economic crisis was to DRILL. OMFG, some of these people are just hopeless.

Here's to hoping the "bottom up" Obama-nomics will be enacted quickly and effectively.
