McCain to boost staff in North Carolina
Sen. John McCain’s political director said Saturday the Republican presidential nominee is increasing staff levels in North Carolina to defend a state that hasn’t gone Democratic for more than three decades.

The renewed focus underscores GOP fears that Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s aggressive strategy in North Carolina has pushed the numbers to the brink of victory.

.....

“This is a state that has obviously grown a great deal,” said McCain political director Mike Duhaime. “Any time you have that kind of growth, you see opportunities for change: electorally and otherwise.”

And the state’s large African-American population has been galvanized by Obama’s candidacy. Registrations among North Carolina African-Americans are up almost 10 percent this year while white registrations are up 4 percent.

3. This is why the "far and wide" state strategy is working.
McCain will be stretched thin protecting traditional red states. Brilliant and effective.

Last I heard the Dem Senate candidate Kay Hagan is leading incumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole. That would be a huge pickup in the Senate.

11. Good Point!
NC is probably McCain's. However, all the resources McCain has to put into pulling of a victory that should have been a given are resources that he can't use in other states. And, who knows, Obama might even win.

6. Obama is moving the battle into red territory which is key
Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan are a little too close for comfort but the demographics are on our side in those states and the boots have been on the ground for months. McSame has to spend serious cash and time if he hopes to flip one of those states and he won't have that cash or time if he has to spend it defending Florida, Virginia, Indiana, and North Carolina. Not to mention Colorado, which is trending heavily in our favor.

And it's funny because when this thing started people were worried that McSame would be able to compete in California and New York.

13. And McCain is forced to spend money and staff in NC instead of Ohio or Florida.
That's beneficial right there.

20. no need to sterotype
Barr is sucking off more than the "bubba" vote around here. He is also sucking off the hard core conservative banker types here in Charlotte. There are quite a few Barr supporters sitting in the towers in our downtown.

The Libertarians are also running a good candidate for Governor and that is also pulling votes from the Republicans.

15. That's money McCain won't be spending in other swing states!
That's why Dean's 50 state strategy is a winner. He can't consider states like North Carolina as being automatically in the bag for him. Combine that with our fundraising advantage over McCain, and we're forcing the GOP to spread their resources really thin. That, and the 50 state strategy rebuilds the Democratic Party in areas where they've been neglected for decades. It won't just pay off in this election, but in elections down the road!

16. THIS is the whole point. We're not gonna win NC, but we're going to drain McDipshit dry...
for him to win it.

18. Exactly. Siphoning off McSame's resources for NC
is a good thing no matter how you slice it.
