3RD Obama Sign STOLEN in last month. DAMN IT.
First - we live in Omaha, NE. We're quickly becoming the 51st battleground state for 1 possible Electoral Vote... so it could actually matter this year! We also live on the main street of our neighborhood.. so almost everyone coming in and going out drives right by our house many times each day.

We popped up our first Obama sign the day Hillary officially dropped out of the race. About a week later it was gone. We then found out that our neighborhood has covenants about political signs not being allowed up until the last week of August, so we thought maybe a neighborhood "watch" person took it down. Fine.

We then waited to pop up the next Obama sign until the last week of August. 3 days later - Stolen Again. Luckily I had orded a box of 5 signs (but we gave one to my mom and one to my best friend) and now only had 1 pretty blue Obama sign left.

We decided to put it up last Sunday, next to our brand new "Jim Esch" sign. Jim is in a tight congressional race with incumbent Lee Terry(R).

Well - we wake up this morning, and the damn Obama sign is gone again. But what REALLY pisses me off is that the Jim Esch sign is STILL THERE. It's like these idiots don't know or care about a white democrat running for Congress.. they only give a shit about taking down the OBAMA sign.

This is where my husbands democratic views get kinda hazy... his whole "gun control" thought process is going a bit bezerk because he just wants to hide behind our front yard tree and shoot the person who's taking the sign. I keep trying to tell him that guns are not the solution.. but I don't know if he cares.

Anyway.. aside from cementing this thing in our front lawn or hiding a camera on the front porch - what can we do?

3. Suggestion: Put it on your roof or somewhere out of reach.
A while back some pesky teenage neighbors kept stealing our pumpkins around Halloween, in fact they looted the entire neighborhood, and then had the audacity to put them on THEIR roof. I seek revenge vicariously!

19. I'd be more then willing to buy a camera..
but the sign sits in a totally dark front yard. I can barely see the sign when looking out the window at night.. i don't know how a camera (espec. a $20) would be able to see more then just a black orb moving when it's stolen.

A night vision camera would rock.. however i have a feeling those are a bit out of my price range.

34. That could be your problem - need more light
Our yard is lit up like a prison yard - due to hubby's PTSD - he has to have light at night.

And yes, we also have cameras - cheapie ones as mentioned above. Our sign is still safe. Of course maybe they just love the O-man here in Texas. Other local political signs have been egged etc....

5. It was probably a Repuke that stole it but.....
I can't help but wonder with all these threads about yard signs, is if some of them aren't the result of Dems stealing from other Dems especially if these yard signs are as hard to come by as some have reported.

18. Nope..
whoever took the last one left the metal parts that stick it into the ground. It's a plastic "bag" like cover that goes over a metal 3 part frame.. the frame was still there (well 2 of the 3 parts), but the sign was gone. This one isn't getting replanted in another yard.

I'd spend my next $100 donation on just buying yard signs and handing them out if people were to poor to buy their own, but wanted one for their own yard.. but I don't think that's the case here.

20. Ohh.. My... Jesus..
Umm.. that would sort of make me throw up in my mouth everytime I came home. It would sorta defeat the purpose.. but it might confuse a few neighbors who are Bible Thumping repugs into maybe just voting for the guy. ;)

7. In 2004, there was a LTTE in our local paper
from a Kerry supporter to the people who stole her yard signs, saying that every time a sign disappeared she donated $20 to the Kerry/Edwards campaign, and thanking the thieves for their support of her candidate.

8. Put the sign in a window....
the most visible from the street. Then get one of those garden lights and shine it in front of your window at night. I'm sure there are other creative things that can go in a window, too.

21. Good Idea.. but
our front window is to far away from the street to really be seen at all - even lit up. We put the sign about 2 feet from the sidewalk so that traffic can really see it, but you wouldn't see it in the window.

In fact - I DO have an Obama sign in our window.. it's faded now. When I made my first donation to the Obama camp in Jan, they sent a mailer that had a tear-out Obama sign on it.. about the size of an 8 & 1/2 X 11 piece of paper.. it's still taped up there.

10. To Protect Mine Here in Ohio.....
I simply take it in every night before I go to bed. Its a simple cost free way to ensure that ur sign is there in the morning. Plus an added bonus is when you get up and go out to your front lawn to put the sign up many passerbyers notice and honk with an approving thumbs up. Its almost like a ritual here in Ohio.

12. Capsaicin.
Find some extra-strength capsaicin cream at your local drug store. Smear it all over the sign and let it dry before very carefully (with gloves) planting it in the ground.

Anyone touching the sign will regret it. Especially if they touch their eyes, nose, or ass before washing it off.

24. If I didn't have a 3 year old..
I'd consider that. However, she does tend to go out for a stroll around the yard - and that would be tough to explain to the E.R. Doctor. "Umm.. the reason my 3 year old is missing her finger and has gangreen from dog fecal matter imbedded in it is because some local punks keep stealing our Obama sign".

:)

27. Douse it with pepper spray.
Yeah, the self-defense variety with heat measured in the millions of Scoville units.

It might not keep the mouth-breathers from stealing the sign, but the moment they rub their eyes or use the men's room and put their hands on their willies, they'll get some justice...

30. First, go to the grocery store.
Purchase 8-16 oz. of habanero chili peppers. Go home, destem the peppers and throw them in a blender, then puree them as finely as possible. Do not be foolish and taste, touch or even smell this puree.

Put on rubber gloves. Heavy ones. Rub the habanero puree all over the Obama sign and its frame and reinstall. Throw gloves in hot soapy water and leave them there for a week. Then rinse them in milk.

Anyone who so much as touches the treated sign and touches their face, nose, eyes, genitals or anus afterwards will be in indescribable agony for hours and have no idea why. Nothing that can cause long term damage, but it will probably send them to the emergency room. If they manage to touch REALLY sensitive areas, they will be hitting themselves in the head with a brick to try and distract themselves from the pain.

I also like the idea of the dog-shit treated razor blades in the side of the sign.

1. Menards. Solar powered spot lamp (Mrs.. OBD bought one for our flag). Once illuminated, I'd hide where I could photograph the thief and get a license tag#?
2. Are these being stolen at night or during the day?
3. I'm curious to know what part of the River City we're talking about?
