How do you deal with people with irritating sounding voices?
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 01:29 PM by bluestateguy
How do you go about your daily business if that involves substantial interaction with someone who has a VERY annoying accent? How do you cope? The reason I ask is because Sarah Palin's voice is like fingers down a chalkboard. That fact that I dislike the words that come out of her mouth only makes it worse, but I suspect I would still be annoyed even if I agreed with her.

1. I shoot them in the face.
And make them apologize for being in my way.

Is that too harsh?

10. Not if you're VP!
I'm sure that is how Palin would deal:)

2. I can't turn up the volume on the t.v when she is on. Just use closed captioning.

And work hard for Obama/Biden so she is not elected VP.

9. I'm hearing impaired so CC
is a great. I'm not totally deaf - I hear irritating sounds like Palin's voice. Also have a girlfriend that when she gets excited or angry about something screeches like Palin. Feels like someone is sticking ice picks in my ears! :hi:

listened to him for years.

8. I love Debbie Wasserman-Schulz's voice. Or Rachel Maddow. It's not the gender, it's the tone,
I guess.

12. Since the beginning of the radio era, people complain more about women's voices....
that's why men's voices do most voiceovers and when women's are used, they're a whisper.

Also notice how nearly all newswomen on local television speak the same way no matter where you are.

On television women can have no accent, a southern accent or an English accent. If you don't talk like that, people don't want to hear you.

14. Actually...
Womens voices have been shown to be more soothing and draw more attention. That's why they are used in GPS and other automotive interactive systems.

It's not the gender, it's the tone. Palin is horridly nasal in her delivery. She is very hard to listen to... unless you've had a heaping helping of the Kool Aid... then you can't get enough, apparently:)

20. Women's voices HAVE to be "soothing," and are expected to be so. If you're not. Forget it...
Another reason Trek fans constantly complained about Capt. Janeway's voice. She didn't talk like a southernor or a Valley Girl.

4. Look, you just have to overcome it (not in Palin's case of course)
early in the primary season, when I was an Edwards' supporter, his accent was something I had to deal with. It bugged me (and still does). For my SO, whose mother was from North Carolina, the Edwards accent was a plus. To me, it was a huge turnoff. So I learned to make myself ignore it.

5.  I would rather hear fingernails on a chalkboard.
I have been describing her voice as fingernails on a chalkboard for weeks. I turn off the radio/tv the second I hear that voice. Though, I admit, I do a pretty good imitation of McMoose.

7. I just want to win this election.
And I can't understand why it would even be close. What have the Republicans done to not deserve their place under the bus?

in our back alley and work them over .... Then my 11 year old daughter records graphic hilarious imitations of the said person's irritating voice and we eat popcorn while watching the video and laughing nonstop.

Seriously my daughter did make such a recording and then she (Palin) walked out of the kitchen saying imagine if she and Joe Liebermann ran together. I would have to kill myself!!!!???

17. I have a neighbor with 'voice immodulation syndrome" no fooling just like SNL
with that Will Ferrill character. Its not a real syndrome but we can hear him
from 8 units away talking on the phone or talking to neighbors where he can't
even hear the neighbors.

19. I have an inborn mechanism that automatically translates annoying or boring speech...
... into the voice of the teacher on The Peanuts. Whenever Palin speaks, all I hear is "Whaa wha wha wha... wha wha wha".
