PurpleHeartNacht: The Night That We Must Forever Remind Americans Of.
PrupleHeartNacht.

Will you help me out with this, friends.

Let's forever stick the outrageously offensive GOP conventioneers' antics the other evening of wearing faux purple heart bandages onto the Republican Party. I'm calling their outrageously mean evening PURPLEHEARTNACHT.

We've now read in the report filed here by Khephra that "those purple heart bandages being worn at the Republican National Convention in New York caused a backlash from the Vietnam Veterans of America."

In fact, this crude and thoughtless act so backfired that the national Vietnam Veterans of America president, Thomas Corey, relayed through Alabama's VVA State Council said "the bandages demean the Purple Heart and the wounded veterans who earned it. Corey says wearing the bandages 'is outrageous, disrespectful and infantile behavior.'The bandages mock Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's claim to have earned three Purple Hearts in Vietnam."

The fact is that the 'purple heart bandages' were worn by a very large segment of the national leaders within the Republican Party who were attending their National Convention. It was not the act of a few individuals, it was an event gleefully participated in by a great number of the Republican delegates who were more than happy to show off their 'bandages' for the international news media.

Will you help me by branding this evening forever within the American Public's conscious? Karl Rove would really like this episode to fade quickly from people's memory, wouldn't he?

But New York is not Las Vegas. What happens in New York at this convention should not be left behind in New York.

PurpleHeartNacht.

1. Just had a discussion with my boss' boss about this
she is a Dem, but she hadn't heard of it. I sent her links. I tried finding stories in the mainstream press by typing in "purple heart band aid RNC" and then checking the News tab and got NOTHING. I sent her the link from Democrats.org

She was nearly in tears. She then asked me about the flip-flop charges (she's already voting Kerry, but has gotten her news from mainstream sources). I explained that it was two different bills, why he voted for the first one which Bush threatened to veto, why he voted against the second one because of the borrowing not repealing taxes and cuts to vets services ("So they call standing on principle flip-flopping?" was her reply). Then brought up the question nobody but Randi Rhodes seems to be asking which is why they were sent there without body armor in the first place. The woman was nearly in tears. She even said she thought the reason the Yankees lost is because they are so disgusted with the RNC being in their hometown. She is going to send the story to everybody she knows.

My mom had a similar story about a new co-worker who is 19 years old who overheard my mother and one of her liberal co-workers (in the Norfolk area of VA by the way) talking about the RNC at lunch. She said something about Saddam causing 9-11. My mom and her friend straightened her out and then the girl sort of became crestfallen and said, "so then why did we invade Iraq?" Apparently mom couldn't refrain from rolling her eyes, and the girl, who felt a little embarrassed at this point, asked if she could explain "the politics stuff" to her because she really didn't know.

As the quote in the tunnel between the #7 train and the B,D,F and Q says, "dripping water hollows the stone."

4. I never get to listen to Randi, but that was my question too!
Why call Kerry on the 87 billion and not call Bush on the fact that our troops were sent into combat without what they needed in the first place?

7. Prodigal_green, Your Story Just Shows How Powerful This Story Is.
I, too, have found few people that even knew about this. The reaction your boss's boss had is the very same one that I find when I tell people this: they can hardly believe it and then they are outraged.

We must give this story the legs that the corporate media refuses to.

We can do it.

2. The woman in the pic has direct ties to Karl Rove and Blackwell runs
the Leadership Institute of which Rove is a graduate. This was NOT scattered individuals, this was coordinated at the TOP.

16. yep, pat might be linked to rove............................
The dipshit in the photo is Pat Peale.

She lives in my little county in north central Texas.

She slithered down here from Ohio around 1992 and now lives at Lake Kiowa, a gated community.

Pat became very active in the Chimpy/Ann Richards contest in 1994.

She also went to work on the local political scene. When she arrived all of the local county office holders were democrats. Now they are all republicans. Her tactic was going around and offering large campaign donations if the office holders would switch parties. Money seems to talk.

Pat also had the editor of the local newpaper/shopper under her spell.

During the 2000 Florida rip-off she was on the scene making sandwiches for the guys "rioting" in the hallway of the election office.

She travels extensively to other states doing organizational work for the repugs.

When the democrats in the Texas legislature went to Ardmore on the redistricting issue, Pat was there leading her troops in the "chicken dance."

Pat has a son that works for Phil Graham, her other son is/was one of Fred Thompson's aides.

Rumor has it that she was very instrumental in the recent party switch of Ralph Hall.

Pat's not just an "individual", she's got some serious clout.

They don't come anymore evil than this.

13. Beyond insulting
and beneath contempt. Then again, this is the party of the Chickenhawk.

We need a new TV ad: Purple Heart Veterans for Respect.

A/B roll showing veterans talking to the camera. They're men and women, variety of ages, races, all wearing purple hearts. The images fade into each other:

"I lost my right arm in Korea."
"I was wounded in Desert Storm."
"The grenade exploded in my foxhole."
"I was pulling my buddy to safety when I was hit."
"The shrapnel tore through our jeep, and through us."

Then

"I wear this purple heart with pride."
"I can't believe the Republicans would show such disrespect to this country's wounded veterans."
"I'm proud of my actions. The Repulicans should be ashamed of theirs."
