Big leap in the Michigan polls for Obama: 48% to 38%

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 48 percent, John McCain 38 percent.

OF INTEREST: This new poll showed a big leap in support for Obama compared to a Sept. 14-17 EPIC-MRA poll conducted before the economy's severe problems. In the earlier poll, the two candidates were basically even, with Obama at 43 percent and McCain at 42 percent.

THE POLL: CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corp. poll, presidential race in Michigan among likely voters.

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 49 percent, John McCain 43 percent, Ralph Nader 3 percent, Bob Barr 2 percent, Cynthia McKinney 1 percent, undecided 1 percent

OF INTEREST: More voters are choosing Obama than in a Sept. 7-9 poll by the same group, which had Obama at 45 percent, McCain at 42 percent and Nader at 6 percent

3. i know. i know!
i've always known that MI will stay true blue. but candidates for national office like to avoid this state like the plague. do you really think any candidate in the primary was totally shattered that they wouldn't have to campaign in michigan?

it's just really nice to get some attention for a change. i do see your point. but we are loving the attention in this sad state - where the wall street bailout threat is "12% unemployment!!!!" we've gotten used to that and higher over here in the great lakes state.

6. don't forget IN!! We're a rust belt, too.
Even though we're not known for choosing Dem presidents, this time I swear it has never been closer. My canvassing tells me it's so. Obama wins in every sample of my canvassing which is not just comprised of Dem voters!

10. LOL! I'm trying! We just have to keep our hopes up and try-
and I have reason to believe it's possible! Now I'm off to drop off 6 more new registrations! I'm in a county of 50,000 and so far our little Obama group alone has turned in close to 100 registrations and more are coming! Even though were red--it might just be the little bit needed to push us over! I am hoping so much!

BTW, I'm glad to know I'm giving hope! Thanks!

4. Obama is solidifying his base of Gore/Kerry states
MI can be a tease, but like in '06 where Granholm looked vulnerable, the state eventually came around and dismissed the nut DeVos. Stabenow and her won their races handily. Obama's race will make it tougher for him, but he'll take it. McCain has the state in only one or two polls I've seen. I'd be very disappointed, disgusted, and somewhat surprised if it doesn't come through for Obama on election night.

BTW, I'm waiting for my MI absentee ballot in the mail. I figure Obama has got the state of OR in the bag (I just came out here recently so I would have to say that MI still counts as my permanent address)!

5. 10 points in MICHIGAN? 23 points in Maryland? 11 points in Iowa?
If Obama is really running up those sorts of margins, I have a sneaking suspicion that it's curtains for McLame.

8. Outlier. Also, according to Nate Silver, CNN polls tend to be biased towards Obama
Still, that's a freaking huge lead. Michigan ain't going red.

13. A statewide Marist poll agrees with CNN.
They've been touting it on local news since yesterday.
