ABC: Bill Clinton defends McCain, praises Bush's economic speech.
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 09:42 AM by Occam Bandage
ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman Reports: Former President Bill Clinton defended Sen. John McCain's request to delay the first presidential debate, saying McCain did it in "good faith" and pushed organizers to reserve time for economy talk during the debate if the Friday plans move forward.

Appearing on Good Morning America Thursday, Clinton told ABC News' Chris Cuomo that McCain's push to postpone the debate would only be a good political move if both candidates agreed. McCain announced on Wednesday that he would "suspend" his presidential campaign to come to Washington to help negotiate a financial bailout bill.

"We know he didn't do it because he's afraid because Sen. McCain wanted more debates," Clinton said, adding that he was "encouraged" by the joint statement from McCain and Sen. Barack Obama.

"You can put it off a few days the problem is it's hard to reschedule those things," Clinton said, "I presume he did that in good faith since I know he wanted -- I remember he asked for more debates to go all around the country and so I don't think we ought to overly parse that."

If the debate moves forward as planned for Friday night, Clinton says "they should be able to talk about this some of the debate because it is a security issue."

The former president thought Bush's address Wednesday night on the economic crisis had a "positive reaction".

"I thought it was the clearest statement of why we're in the fix we're in, at least what the nature of it is and why some national action is needed," Clinton said.

19. He did the same thing in 2004 - hawking his book
on all the shows, stealing all the air in the room, right in the middle of Kerry's campaign. Giving faint praise to Kerry, or not mentioning him at all. Praising Bush to the hilt.

That's our bad boy Bill, ain't it. It's all just politics, it 's all in good faith and good fun.

He's just worried... But with debates its hard to re-schedule, so he'll just have to take the time.. Actually, its good.. he's daring him into it.

22. I really don't want to believe that Bill Clinton is trying to actively undermine Obama's campaign.
But it seems like some of his behavior has been otherwise inexplicable. He has many defenders here on DU, yet their argument always seems to be "he's obviously calling them out!" I don't see how constantly praising McCain and Palin are calling them out, and when you combine it with consistent faint praise for Obama, a pretty bad picture is beginning to emerge.

But I don't want to believe it, so if anybody can convince me otherwise, please try.

He was ridiculous on Larry King last night & that was basically the
straw that broke this camels back.

On Edit: I'm a huge Clinton fan & have supported him for YEARS. What he is doing right now is counter productive to our party and insulting to us as Obama voters!

35. There is a video at the link. Of the entire interview. Do you actually believe that
the interview context is somehow redeeming (and that Bill Clinton, a man who deftly manipulated and controlled messages for eight years, has suddenly found himself with all the political savvy of a particularly stupid parakeet), or is this just another example of "out-of-context" being the preferred knee-jerk response to damning quotes in the 21st century?

41. To those who didn't watch, listen to these points he made:
1) They can take a couple of days, there's no need for absolute immediacy.

2) Any bailout should be repayable to taxpayers, no freebies.

3) Democrats aren't playing politics, they're trying to keep to higher standards.

4) McCain can't get away with it without mutual agreement. McCain *can argue that he wanted more debates* which is why it's a non-starter to *claim* that he's "running away." Bill is thinking politically, geez.

So because Bill pointed out the obvious he's getting lamblasted here, great!

Everytime, you try to give him a pass or soften up towards him...there he goes again...digging a little deeper, sticking the knife in Obama's back again. One would get the impression he's supporting McCain this year? And, I bet he is!
