Could McCain just be trying to lower expectations?
With his proposal to postpone the debate, he could be trying to create the impression that he is not ready or afraid to debate Obama so that when he shows up and puts on a decent performance, he will exceed people's expectations.

It could be that he really is unprepared but I just have trouble believing that his campaign is as incompetent as they appear right now. I keep thinking they must have some trick up their sleeve.

1. Of course they have more tricks up their sleeve
This whole campaign, from the spokesmodel vp choice to this "suspension" have all been cheap political theater. The bad sex commercials, pigs and lipstick, blackberrys...come on...

That's all they've got. And with each trick, they get a little weaker. More people get turned off.

People are pissed right now about the bailout - it's not a good time to be taking them for fools as well.

As for the Obama campaign, well I haven't seen them stumble or drop the ball yet. It's almost like the cheap tricks act as fertalizer for them.

2. If so, he's got his work cut out for him.
I mean, how much more can he fail to do? He's only one guy, and not even related to *.

3. Hmmm
I found myself wondering if he's just trying to screw up Obama's debate prep plans, too. But I have no fear. I think the whole thing has made McCain look like a completely political tool.

4. I don't think so.
Too great a cost (looks weak, frightened, flaky) for too little benefit (lowered expectations).
