DECISION 2008: POLL
Poll: Crisis boosts Obama in Mich.
3 in 5 likely voters fear another Great Depression; majority like Democrat's solutions more than rival's.

The Wall Street financial crisis has deepened Michigan voters' economic anxieties, a factor that appears to have boosted Democrat Barack Obama in the presidential race here, according to the latest Detroit News-WXYZ Action News Poll.
The survey, commissioned by The News, WXYZ and three outstate television stations and conducted by Lansing's EPIC-MRA, shows real fear of nationwide economic disaster: Three out of every five voters said they worry the crisis could spark another Great Depression, and nine out of 10 say they are concerned about its effect on the economy.
Amid that fear, Obama's support appears to be rising. The survey shows likely voters here prefer Obama over Republican John McCain, 48 percent to 38 percent, a nine-point jump in Obama's lead from the last EPIC-MRA poll, released just last week.
EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said there are several favors that could account for Obama's lead, including the random variations present in any sampling of voters. But Porn said the poll also reflects real movement toward Obama. By 10 points, 42 percent to 32 percent, Michigan voters say Obama, more than McCain, has proposed ideas for dealing with the financial meltdown that reflect their own views.
