Holy shit, CNN trashing Zell, and he's speechless (transcript)
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 10:54 PM by JPJones
Zell: I honor John Kerry's service (?)

Judy: John Kerry voted for 16 of 19 defense budgets. Many of the votes against, Dick Cheney also voted against.

Zell: I have got documentation on every single one of those votes right here. (Pulls paper out of his pocket) I've got more documentation here than the Library of Congress and the NY Public library put together, on that. (OK, crazy Zell)

Jeff: You were indignant that anyone would call the American military occupiers. On at least four occasions, President Bush has referred to the presence of American forces in Iraq as an occupation. And the question is, are you selectively choosing words to describe the same situation that the president has described?

Zell: I don't know if the President of the United States uses those words, but I know that Senator Kennedy and Kerry have used them on several occasions.

Jeff: SO HAS PRESIDENT BUSH!

Zell: Well I don't know about that.

Wolf: We know that when the vice president was the secretary of defense, he proposed cutting back on the B2 bomber, the F14 tomcat. I know, I was covering him at the Pentagon when he expressed serious concerns about those two weapons systems.

Zell: (Silence) Look, the record is as I stated, he voted against, he opposed all of these weapon systems. That shows the kind of priority he has as far as national defense. Look, John Kerry came back from Vietnam (silence) as a young man (silence) unsure whether America was a force for good or evil in the world, he still has that uncertainty about him.

Jeff: He said in 2001 that he would strengthen the military.

Zell: Because that was the biographical sketch that they (uh uhm, the Democrats) gave you...babble babble

Judy: You reject the idea that Cheney voted against some these systems?

Zell: I don't think Cheney voted against them.

Wolf: No, but he opposed some of them when he was Sec Def...

Zell: I'm talking about John Kerry's record...

Wolf: You appeared so angry tonight, that some are suggesting that your appearance could backfire...

Zell: I'm sure there are some anchors who are saying that (Laughs maniacally). That's what aaanchurs do.

Wolf: The bottom line question is why are you still a Democrat?

Zell: Cause I was born a Democrat.

Judy: But other people change parties.

Zell: Well, other people are not Zell Miller. I am gonna die a Democrat. I'm goin' up to the pearly gates and I'm gonna see my maker, and I'm gonna see my mamma and my daddy, and I'm going to say, I remained a Democrat.

Crazy, crazy for loving Zell Miller.

2. Cheney cut defense big time under Bush Sr.
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 10:34 PM by Paul_H
He canceled the A-12 Stealth Attack Aircraft.... the biggest defense contract cancellation in history!

(Then, four months later, he said, "If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have canceled it.")

If Wolf covered the Pentagon during that time, he should have remembered that! Damn! A lost opportunity....

16. Greenfield couldn't stop laughing
This was unbelievable! Jeff Greenfield kept lowering his head to try and conceal the fact that he was laughing at Zell. Then they brought on Tad Devine, who was great. Then CNN - to try appease the Republicans - pointed out that they had Ralph Reed on right after the Edwards speech, so they were just being fair.

I guess the pressure from Media Matters paid off tonight.

I hope we see more of this from CNN!

Zell Miller is a crazy nutjob who made an absolute fool out of himself tonight. This will completely backfire on Bush...and I'm sure we won't be seeing Benedict Miller out on the campaign trail with Bush anytime soon.

21. This explains a lot
I was going to ask about his comment that the Democrats are obsessed with destroying "our president". I was guessing he hasn't read "Blinded By the Right" or "The Hunting of the President". Has he forgotten that for 8 years the Republicans literally spent millions of dollars to destroy Clinton?

He's become senile. That's the only explanation. I voted for him as governor and I don't remember him being this bad. It's sad...

23. Zell's a Dixiecrat, not a Democrat
I'm too young to fully understand the dixiecrats, but they basically were democrats just to be the opposite of Lincoln, and just to be the opposite of the NY republicans who came down in the 60's to register blacks to vote.

Zell's a racist first and foremost.

Of course, Strom had the common decency to haul his withered ass over to the Republican party during Nixon's realignment...

26. dixiecrats...
worth quoting here. From the wikipedia:
"The Dixecrats were a group of Southern Democrats who opposed integration and wanted to retain Jim Crow laws and racial segregation. The popular name of the party originated from "Dixie", which is a term used to describe the South.

The party was formed after a walkout of Southern delegates, led by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, from the 1948 Democratic National Convention. The walkout was prompted by a controversial speech by Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota urging the party to adopt an anti-segregationist platform, based on the shared experience of black and white Americans during World War II. After the announcement by President Harry Truman that his platform would advocate the passage of civil rights laws, Thurmond helped organize the walkout delegates into a separate party, whose platform was ostensibly concerned with states' rights."

want more? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixiecrat
