Here's an idea for the SEC chairman.... close the market tomorrow....

Give Congress and the administration a 3-day weekend to solve this.

Then open the market Monday.

We closed the market for a week following 9/11. We can close it for a day for this.

2. Too risky. If you can't get a deal done by Monday, you will have panic on the markets.

3. The markets have a mind of their own.
They correct. They go up and down. It's not all about the bailout. I say let 'er rip. Then we will have buying opportunities! When Obama gets back in the world will enter our markets again in a big way.

5. they could get the deal done a week from next wednesday and it would be fine
they can't spend months on this, but a matter of days won't make much difference to the economy.

it WOULD have a big impact on the presidential campaign, though.

6. That Would Make Things Much, Much Worse
The market will probably be down tomorrow. Bankruptcies usually affect the market for one day only. It is not likely to crash. There will be another up day when a plan is agreed on.

Closing the markets is what would cause panic.
