Same for "riverboat gambler", "maverick", "roll the dice", and any other trite phrase used to explain highly erratic poor decision making.

A "Hail Mary" is a rational decision. It's rational based on the clock and your options.
When it's the only option. Palin can at least be argued to have effected the campaign, first for good and then for worse. McCain's unknown reason for trying to slip out of the debates is far more suspect both as campaign policy and just general behavior. It's weird. Kind a creepy. Like what did he imagine was going to happen?
