Newsweek: McCain Camp successfully shifted spotlight off of Davis's ties to Freddie Mac

http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/09/25/the-real-upside-of-mccain-s-suspension.aspx

When I first weighed in on John McCain's decision to "suspend" his campaign and swoop into Washington, I said that "for the moment, this is almost all upside for McCain, at least politically." One reason was that the maneuver shifted the media spotlight off of campaign manager Rick Davis's ties to Freddie Mac--then the MSM's scandale du jour--and onto potentially favorable terrain. That's still true. In the 24 hours since McCain's announcement, NEWSWEEK's indefatigable investigative ace Michael Isikoff has reported that "Davis has remained the treasurer and a corporate director of his lobbying firm this year, despite repeated statements by campaign officials that he had ended his relationship with the firm in 2006"--and no one seemed to notice.

In an economic meltdown, it's all about the pocketbook.

4. Not really. We have long memories and America will go back to Davis' Conflict of Interest
after the bailout is resolved.

Count on it. Lehrer has already signalled he won't be constrained by the format.

9. I'll say it again...it wouldn't have attracted headlines anyway.
As abominable as it is, it doesn't have that DRAMA element that the media clings to when choosing what scandals to dwell on.

10. How could he have "successfully shifted the spotlight"
when a media outlet like "Newsweek" is still reporting on it? The more correct assessment might be that the M$M wasn't really reporting on it anyway, outside of Newsweek and I think the NYT, since nearly all skew in the lunatic-fringe's favor.

13. Honestly, I don't see that issue as damaging as what they've now done to themselves.
"Rick Davis lied to me and is no longer with the campaign". That would've just about solved that problem, IMO.

But the well-publicized erratic behavior McCain has shown in the past few days has done himself more harm. He's going to MS without a deal on the table. He went back on his word.

People might not understand the interplay between the banking industry, lobbyists and Washington, but they do understand when someone has chickened out and gone back on his word.

The Rick Davis situation would've been a blow to his politics, but the bailout/debate situation has dealt a serious blow to his character.
