The Pundits Have To Call This Debate For McCain Or Election Is Over Right Now
This is the first debate in Mississippi, a red state, on foreign policy, the one area that readily allows McCain to wax poetic about his POW experience. I think the debate will probably have McCain rattling off talking points, and Obama occassionally being long winded, but no real knock out. However, I do expect the pundits to call it for McCain, because if they don't, McCain's campaign is over. He is out of bullets, and the pundits are out of work. Thus, I personally don't foresee any earth shattering moments, but don't rely on the pundits, because after McCain's stunt filled week and Palin's epic meltdown, the pundits will have to throw him a life line.

Watch the debate, but ignore the pundits, and make up your own mind.

4. You could be right.
The media loves their damn horse race, for sure.

Having said that...

McCain's campaign is completely frazzled right now. His spokespeople are getting pissy with the media, nobody knew WTF was up at all today, McCain apparently decided on the spur of the moment that he was doing the debate, and they told the press to be ready to go in 45 minutes, then left without them...

They're on edge, while Obama is his usual collected self. and knowing his team, they've no doubt had him working on keeping his answers short and sweet.

The situation in the McCain camp may be so bad that a meltdown is not out of the question. If McCain gets snippy, it's done - the media's wishes notwithstanding.

5. The pundits may declare a winner, but ultimately its the voters that will
The majority of Americans that do watch the debate will watch very little if any of the pundits afterwards... its a weekend.

6. Evidently, Judd Legum sorta agrees with you (cross-posted from HuffPo)

(snip)
There were 23 debates during the Democratic primary and part of my job on the Hillary campaign was to monitor the post-debate reaction in the media. I watched hundreds of self-described political experts instantly declare who won and who lost.

Here's what I learned: the pundits are full of it. They don't know any more than you do and many of them have a vested interest in tilting the scales one way or another. After the debate ends, if you want to know who won, turn off the TV. You can figure it out for yourself.

The first thing to understand is that the winner of the debate isn't the person who makes the best arguments. If it was, Al Gore would be finishing up his second term. The winner of the debate is the person who moves votes to their side.
