I am proud of Kerry and of our convention!
It's been a long time since I questioned my political affiliations, but any lingering doubts I may have had were buried, perhaps permanently, by what I've witnessed at the RNC.

If such a display of fear and loathing was the public face of my political party, I would be utterly ashamed.

We used our moment in the sun to promote hope and tolerance, illuminate our plans for economic and homeland security, emphasize the importance of scientific discovery and lay out our Candidate's clear vision for America. They have used the spotlight to deliver tired platitudes, appeal to base fear and intolerance, exploit a national tragedy, and launch jingoistic attacks against Kerry.

Slyly, they've given the task of scaring the American public to their most moderate members (and one DINO), while keeping the truly frightening face of their party away from the cameras, and hiding 'hedonistic' Lynn Cheney from their delegates.

By dressing their wolf in a wool coat and shoving their sheep backstage, they are hoping to have it both ways. They want to give their message both mainstream credibility and extremist acceptance. That's why you saw conservative Frank Luntz trot out "undecideds" to say Zell Miller's hate filled speech was believable and damaging because he was a Democrat. That's why they sicked mainstream John McCain on radical Michael Moore (not my labels).

The simple truth is they know their message is fundamentally unacceptable, and so they resort to artifice and illusion. We didn't have to pretend, we didn't have to lie, and we didn't need to bash.

Kerry came out of our convention looking strong, and that's why the GOP is working so hard to tear him down. Their strategy, however, is tenuous. Kerry's courage isn't merely a political pretense like Bush's compassion. It is a genuine trait which cannot be easily vanquished by rhetoric, or even Terminator bravado.

2. yup, remember how proud and excited we were seeing our speakers
from long time party people like Jimmy Carter, to modern day stars like Bill Clinton, and future stars like Barak Obama and Jennifer Granholm, and our current candidates Kerry and Edwards.

and of course the speeches by the other primary candidates who people supported and were glad to see again. and so many others.

i didn't feel anything lacking in those. what i saw was not just us being against others, but i saw why we are democrats, what we are about, who we are and what we have to offer.

3. The consensus among the TV pundits I've heard is that the Repugs are
giving up on the swing voters and are reaching out as strong as they can to their conservative base, in hopes of overwhelming the Dems with turnout percentage. I was sort of surprised by this assessment, but it makes sense considering what has been displayed at the RNC so far. Expect this type of vile and hate filled spewage to continue as they throw red meat to the "true believers".

6. YES!!!!!!
"We didn't have to pretend, we didn't have to lie, and we didn't need to bash."
In fact, by this point, all the GOP has to hope for is a negative campaign from both sides that turns off voters...

12. <Yawn>...
Max Cleland ran an honest campaign. His opponent and those on his campaign ran a campaign of sleaze.

Did Cleland win the election or did the sleazeballs win?

Do we want Kerry to be another Cleland? From some of the shots DU'ers have taken at me and others who question the Kerry team tactics, apparently they do.

13. I don't think we needed..
to run a hatefest, but I think they didn't have a choice.

We are going to get tough and Kerry is going to get tough, there's no question about that. Sadly, Cleland didn't have the kind of money and support that Kerry has right now. Cleland wasn't in the national spotlight, and 9/11 and the war were fresh on voters minds. To paraphrase Molly Ivins, Rove can only dish it out for so long. At some point it's going to come back and bite him in the ass.

The GOP is walking a fine line by running this type of campaign. They are hoping to keep voter turnout low, but I think what they'll end up doing is encouraging more people to go out and vote against Bush.

My guess is that they are setting Bush up to give a comforting, patriarchal speech tonight. It won't work if people are more annoyed than scared.

The party's over.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Kerry-Edwards campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill released the following statement today in advance of the president's convention speech:

"Tonight George Bush will tell us that this is a moment in history that will be remembered. But it will be remembered for the failures and divisiveness of his leadership.

"George Bush squandered our unity and our prosperity. These four negative nights have confirmed the obvious - this country can't take four more years of George Bush's callous presidency.

"Forty minutes of a speech can't make up for four years of failure and for Bush policies which take America in the wrong direction.

"The last four years have been an abject failure: almost 2 million lost jobs, 5 million more without health care coverage, health care and energy costs going through the roof and a mess in Iraq that has cost America over $200 billion.

"The president once again will stubbornly refuse to face up to his failures and change course. We can expect the president to again mislead the American people - not only about his record in the past but about plans for the future. We will hear a warmed over repetition of promises he made in 2000 and has broken ever since. John Kerry and John Edwards will present America with plans for jobs, health care, energy and national security to make America stronger at home and respected in the world."

**********

BTW, are you suggesting a dishonest campaign?

17. Cleland vs. Chambliss was a different ballgame
That over the top shit won't fly nationwide. I live in GA, and this state (except for the great city of Atlanta) is in the conservative toilet.

The GOP literally morphed a picture of Max with Osama. This is when the memory of 9/11 was freshly etched into the peoples psyche. The propaganda worked to win the battle, but it may have cost the GOP the war.

The GOP is so angry, so bitter, and so repulsive to just about anyone who isn't a brownshirt. Thank god Zell Miller spoke last night. The Dems should be glad that this psycho says the party has left him.

Bill Clinton ran an honest, positive campaign and by the end of it, GHWBush was so frustrated he was practically incoherent.

20. I am proud of John Kerry,
and I am so proud of our DNC!

All I saw this week was hate, ridicule, and lies.
It was a shameful display of ugliness by the Republicans.
We are a better people than what we have witnessed this week at the RNC.

As John Kerry said, "Let America be America again".

And I agree with what you said: "Kerry's courage isn't merely a political pretense like Bush's compassion. It is a genuine trait which cannot be easily vanquished by rhetoric, or even Terminator bravado."
