Sarah Palin in Remedial Class; Failing as Running mate
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 09:12 AM by Roberto1223
MSNBC is reporting that Palin is taking two days off to prepare for the debates. She is cramming as many political positions as possible after her embarrassing and iluminating gaffes and mis-steps as a running mate and in her abysmal interviews with Gibson and Couric. Todd Davine is just saying that her expectations are extremely low and Biden is at a disadvantage because his expectations are out of control.

1. And "debate camp" is at McCain's resort-like estate in Sedona.
I wonder if Biden is holding his debate camp in ONE of Obama's properties. :eyes:

2. I think I know why this is so hard.
Watching the Gibson and Couric interviews I thought several times: I could do a better job of articulating my positions than this... even though I have no foreign policy experience, no military experience, no economic experience, and am a terrible public speaker.

Why is that? Well... when we (by we I mean progressives) approach a problem, even one we are unfamiliar with, we look at the facts and try to develop a conclusion that is best for the American people on the whole. It's a natural process that involves logic and instinct.

The difference is, Republicans can't do this. The policies they form aren't for the betterment of the whole - it's for the betterment of the rich, the powerful, and the corporate. It's not a thought process that *should* come naturally to any human being.

Sarah is obviously small time and while she is well versed in her own beliefs on abortion, religion, drilling for oil, etc. - she has no background to base any knowledge of national economics, foreign policy, etc. She's essentially a blank slate in this regard.

Instead of coaching her on how to listen to a question and respond off the cuff based on established fundamental beliefs and logic, they are having to coach her to ignore her instincts and recite a party platform that 1) she is obviously not too familiar with and 2)isn't logical to most human beings.

Imagine if you or I were given the task of arguing the Republican view point. I couldn't do it. Half the time I don't understand why the think what they think.

Anyway... it's a theory. I lived in Alaska when she was running for governor. I knew she wasn't a brain surgeon, but she came off as much smarter than she is now. I've been baffled as to why she seemingly has lost 100 IQ points. But I think this could explain it.

4. You've hit on it.
I think you're exactly right! If Palin were allowed to speak her own mind and "be herself" she would probably sound much more coherent (albeit wrong-headed policywise), as we have been assured she did sound as governor. Instead, she has to stay "on message" and match McLame's position on each of dozens of topics, as well as responding to followup questions, after only a few days of cramming, in totally unfamiliar subject areas. This is why she sounds like a mediocre student BSing her way through an oral exam - because that's what she is.

How about starting a new thread expressing your theory so more will see it and comment?

10. There's already plenty of threads exploring this argument
over at FreeRepublic.com

Yeah, the only reason Gov. Know-Nothing can't even make it through a simple interview without coming off as a complete moron is because McCain's handlers have messed with her head. I don't think so!

6. I think she seemed smarter because she was talking about what she knows..
she has no worldview. All of us seem smarter when we talk about things we are actively involved in... that's the difference. That woman has no business trying to feign foreign policy understanding.

7. Right--I could tell you all about my career, my perspective as
a military wife, my hobbies, whatever, and sound intelligent, because I've thought about it a lot and lived it--ask me to be ready to speak intelligently and coherently about every important national and international issue facing us in this election, and I would have to skate by on a lot of superficial knowledge and regurgitation of what I've heard, and hope it passes. That's all she's doing.

8. So we'll be seeing less of her now?
I bet the press is upset that they won't be able to ask her questions for the two days she's out.
