Marry Me a Little
I've had this same thought; what could derail the debate this week?

Marry Me a Little

With extreme skepticism, I pass along the latest rumored "long ball" by the McCain campaign, courtesy of the Times of London:

In an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one — the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.

Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

My own prediction: In the unlikely event this scenario comes to pass, it will turn out that the only day the wedding can be scheduled is this Thursday. :spray:

1. It won't matter. If this bailout doesn't happen today, the race is over
for mccrap.

5. Has McCain expressed his support or opposition to it?
I do remember reading that his staff didn't know if he'd go to DC for the vote, but I don't think I've heard if he's for it or against.

9. He said in the debate; "sure", he would vote for it....
so I guess that's a yes? But the bigger thing is, that the republicans are the ones pushing back against it. All I heard the other day was, that the house republicans can't stand mccain. So we'll see what happens today, but my point was, that he went there to get this thing together, or so he says, and it didn't happen? So he is ineffectual.

14. Oh -- gotcha. Missed your point.
I'm thinking it'll pass. I've heard a few Repubs say they're supporting it. On the other hand, I've heard a few Dems say they were voting against it. We'll see -- not too much longer now.

3. They're so ridiculous.
They've turned this race into a damned joke. I know some people will care but I REALLY don't care about her shitty family and I wish for them all to go back to Alaska and live in relative obscurity.

Is that too much to ask?

And answer questions without that other person. :-)

People will see through this ridiculous, sad stunt.

The American people dont give a rats ass whether your soul-mates pregnant daughter has a shotgun wedding or not. We've got BILLS and GAS and HEALTH CARE to worry about. So, go fuck yourselves. :nuke:

and on edit: Going to a party instead of the debate is a real punch in the voters stomaches. Shows you dont really give a shit about us after all. As if we didnt already know.

7. Somehow I doubt a shot gun wedding of a 17 year old girl
would endear Palin to anyone other than her already brain dead supporters. I believe most voters would feel a little sick just thinking about a Mom throwing her daughter out there for the sake of an election.

8. I'd LOVE for this to be the case...
If McCain's scenario came true, it would wipe out about 20% of the remaining campaign days...giving McCain much less time to catch up.

It would allow lots of news reports about Wasilla, along with footage of the strip-mall "city hall" where Palin reigned.

And it would remind everyone of the Religious Right's hypocrisy, trying to get everyone all sentimental about a shotgun wedding.

Maybe they can even have the ceremony performed by that loony Kenyan pastor, who might decide to throw in an exorcism to drive out "the spirit of witchcraft" that caused Bristol and Levi to Do It before they were married!

11. Amazing...
How would a typical American view a marriage like that? Have the republicans really anything to gain from such a stunt? As a European I fail to understand completely. When middle-east immigrants marry off their 17 year old daughters, we usually scream for laws to prevent it.

25. the only "typical" americans who count are the undecideds
5% or so of americans with little-to-no information regarding the candidates other than hazy impressions (i heard obama's a muslim, i heard mccain was a POW). a significant percentage of these americans are typically low-income, low-education, & lower-middle-class (american code for poor). to be frank, these are the exact group of people most likely to have had teenage pregnancies in their families, or to have been teenage parents themselves.

so there's a certain logic to the GOP strategy for this - distract the feeble-minded with pretty dresses & baby showers & the purple mountain majesty of an Alaska backdrop for the vows. create identification with the Palin's "situation" & resentment against Obama's camp for "attacking" the sacred institution of marriage.

now if Levi can just show some spine when the GOP starts with the stipend talk - i imagine he's looking at a some nice wedding presents from Cindy McCain's vast fortune - a new snowmobile, a 4WD truck, a lifetime supply of elk steaks, ted stevens girdwood "cabin", all the matanuska thunderfuck he can smoke, etc...

12. No, to cancel the debate for a wedding would be dumb because the wedding doesn't have to be on that
date. That would look like she was looking for an excuse. And how does two teenagers getting married do anything to affect the election? This article is lame in many respects.

McCain camp prays for Palin wedding

22. "It would shut down the race for a week.” Apparently, they really are that stupid.
It would allow Obama/Biden to go on the offensive in swing states BIG time. After all, shouldn't the entire Mccain staff be there? I think so.

15. Ain't gonna happen.
The rumors are Levi was practically DRAGGED down to the lower 48 to attend the convention. He and Bristol are on the outs. He doesn't want to get married. She doesn't want to get married.

I read somewhere that Palin tried to force them to get married before the convention and they BOTH refused. Sounds like they are smarter than their parents.

I don't see a wedding in their future... as hard as the thugs might try to force them into it.

I want it to be an elaborate, gaudy mess of daisies and flying jesus babies. I want wall to wall coverage and live cameras as Bristol and Levi waltz robotic-like down the aisle. I want Muthee to marry them. I want Fox and Friends to provide color commentary. I want a cheesy xtian singer to wail. I want snowbilly relatives galore. I want Bobby Trendy to design Bristol's dress. I want the married couple to ride off to their Branson, Missouri honeymoon in a festooned snowplow. I want this wedding broadcast on every major channel.

Please.
