Do not let Repubs take all credit for killing this bailout.

Nor should we blame all Repubs (except McCain't who promised to lead Repubs to pass the bailout and who failed to deliver on that promise) for the nearly 800 point loss the the Dow today.

Whether you call today's vote a success or a failure, it was a bi-partisan action.

6. I was a yes vote, but only barely. This is necessary, but the deal on the table isn't great so I
wouldn't call no votes "foolish." There are some excellent Democrats who voted against the bailout.

2. Hey, thanks!
I just posted in another thread that I couldn't find a list of yays and nays. I was specifically looking for my Rep., Nancy Boyda, because I know her constituents have been heavily anti-bailout. I had a strong feeling she was voting against it.

3. Dems promised 140 votes. They delivered 141.
The Repugs promised 80 votes, and delivered 65.

DO THE MATH.

4. Wrong. The Dems guaranteed 140 votes and got it
The Repubs guaranteed 100 and failed. The Repubs killed it.

8. The Repubs failed to deliver what McCain promised, but many Repubs see this failure as a good thing
but they fail to share credit for defeating the bailout with the 95 Democrats who voted against it.

5. The Republicans promised Pelosi a certain number of votes, they didn't deliver
If they had negotiated it such that Pelosi had to deliver more votes and she hadn't then she would be at fault. But she delivered what she was supposed to and they didn't. Therefore it is their fault.

7. Interesting most of the Illinois Dems
who voted it down represent the south Chicago area.

Bobby Rush - south side

Jesse Jackson - south side & southeast suburbs

Dan Lipinski - southwest side & suburbs

10. No, if you look at percentages (as per Josh Marshall), D's did their party while R's didn't:
Look at the Numbers
There's a lot of talk out there from commentators who you'd think would know better claiming that this was basically a bipartisan failure -- that both parties, Republicans and Democrats, failed to carry their members for this bill.

But look at the numbers. 60% of Democrats in the House voted for this bill. 33% of Republicans. Face it, that's not even close.

Both parties wanted to force as few members to vote for this as possible. It's really unpopular. It's perfectly legitimate (though in the absence of any credible alternative, pretty iffy) to argue that the Republicans did the right thing by killing the bill. But there's simply no question of why and how this bill failed.

13. True, but don't let the Repubs get away with the "we killed the Democrat's bailout" bullshit. The
deal was a bi-partisan bill and it failed for lack of bi-partisan support.

Let the history books blame the Repubs, but in today's climate the VAST majority of Democrats, the VAST majority of Repubs, and the VAST majority of independents see the failure of the bailout as a success.

14. Two thirds of Democrats supported it. Two thirds of Republicans opposed it.
Yes, this is partisanship. Yes, it's the Republicans' fault. McCain encouraged the House Republicans in opposing it, which led to the defeat that led to the Wall Street collapse.
