The New Palin Shoe Dropping -- She Can't Name More Than One Supreme Court Decision
other than Roe v. Wade.

:wow:

Of concern to McCain's campaign, however, is a remaining and still-undisclosed clip from Palin's interview with Couric last week that has the political world buzzing.

The Palin aide, after first noting how "infuriating" it was for CBS to purportedly leak word about the gaffe, revealed that it came in response to a question about Supreme Court decisions.

After noting Roe vs. Wade, Palin was apparently unable to discuss any major court cases.

There was no verbal fumbling with this particular question as there was with some others, the aide said, but rather silence.

187. They are working, really hard, to forget that case
Lisa, the complete destruction of the Republican Party can be laid at the feet of that decision. Were it not for Bush v. Gore, America would:

* not be on the verge of the Second Great Depression
* not be losing two different wars
* have a very large budget surplus, not the biggest deficit ever
* still have the Twin Towers
* not have been embarrassed by the president's obscene hand gestures and falling-down drunkenness at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony

Given all that, would YOU want to admit the Supreme Court installed that man into the Oval Office?

In communications you learn the finer points of teleprompter reading and putting on makeup for the camera.

My degree is in Communications - my emphasis was in journalism/print news.

And, when I went to school, I had to have more course hours than all my business major friends. I also was required to do an internship, which increased my time spent attending classes from four years to five (I worked, too, to pay the bills and couldn't take 18 course hours, weekly).

That said, I also didn't skip around to five schools in six years and I graduated with honors and Chancellor's citations.

Communications can be a particularly demanding major. I really don't see how Churchy Spice graduated in it at all.

Palin went to some pretty low-tier schools, including community colleges. Somehow I doubt she went through a rigorous program.

Hell, I can name 5 cases off the top of my head. Hell, we ALL can. And none of us is striving to be Vice President of the United States.

I mean, we can laugh at Tina Fey. But this is just getting more and more ridiculous.

78. I had heard she had notecards
and have been carefully watching while the MSM keeps replaying excerpts of her interviews. And I think it is right - she keeps noticeably looking down, then quickly up she comes with some stupid nonsensical phrase totally unrelated to the question. And repeat and repeat.

I have seen plenty of lousy presidential candidates in my years on the planet, but nothing prepared me for the risk to my nation of the candidacy of John McCain. It actually frightens me at times. I have no explanation for the deranged mental state of anyone who at his age, would put up someone like Palin for the vp role.

she glanced down in her lap and said, "Oh! It has to be about job creation, too!"

She obviously had talking points on cue cards and even with those she can't figure out when to use each talking point. Bailout? Must be healthcare reform!

Marbury v. Madison

Brown vs. Board of Education
Roe v. Wade

Sorry, I just cannot get it below four. That's high school graduation level.

For an aspiring crooked president Bush v. Gore and the Nixon tapes decision should be of practical interest.

(I think there are about 50 an average VP candidate should be able to talk about.)

162. Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad
One of the most important cases in history, for the following sentence...

"The court does not wish to hear argument on the question whether the provision in the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which forbids a State to deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws, applies to these corporations. We are all of the opinion that it does." - Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite

And with that pre-trial sentence, corporations were granted protection as "persons" under the 14th Amendment.

until Mr. Retrograde brought it up. And I even live in Santa Clara County.

There's one I'm trying to find: the court ruled that states could not collect exit fees from visitors. I read about it on a tour of the old Nevada State Capitol building (great building, one of my top 5 capitols), but I can't remember the name.

Amchem Products v. Windsor and Ortiz v. Fibreboard Corp. -
Consumer rights case resulting in protections for the rights of victims injured by toxic substances.

Mapp v. Ohio -
Protected people from unreasonable searches and seizures by applying the exclusionary rule to state and local criminal cases

Wesberry v. Sanders -
Determined that each person's vote carries equal measure

NAACP v. Alabama -
Protected the right of freedom of association

Abington School District v. Schempp -
Determined that forced prayer in school is a violation of First Ammendment

New York Times v. Sullivan -
Determined public officials couldn't sue succesfully for libel even though the published information was false and establishjed that actual malice/reckless disregard had to be proven

After the McCain/Palin interview, CBS announced that tomorrow there will be "behind the scenes" footage of Palin along with her answers to some other questions.

I mean, come on, Palin, just off of the cuff, I can think of Brown v. Board of Education, Miranda v. Arizona and heck, Dred Scott v. Sanford.

These rulings aren't necessarily arcane legal decisions. They impact people's lives. From desegration to interracial marriage to abortion. Lawrence v Texas impacts not only me as a gay man but gay men and lesbians in this country. It struck down the last legal roadblock to same-sex marriage. Hell, in his hateful dissent, Scalia said as much.

91. Some people don't have a world class education
Maybe they're too poor to continue or they don't go far in college because they marry young and begin having children. But that's no excuse to stop learning about the world around them. I just can't understand how someone like Palin would presume to present herself for major public office (even the Governorship of Alaska) without continually improving herself on her own, reading everything about government and law that she can. I would feel completely embarrassed to run for office and have no broad knowledge of government and laws including the history of major Supreme Court decisions, the U.S. Constitution, and major legislation. Palin doesn't seem to have enough intelligence or enlightenment to see how pathetic she is. McCain on the other hand is a long-time politician and should know better than to associate himself with this attrocity.

132. New York Times vs. Sullivan. She'll need to know that one when she tries to sue the media!
Aww ... I'll just cut and paste from Wikipedia:

New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964), was a United States Supreme Court case which established the actual malice standard which has to be met before press reports about public officials or public figures can be considered to be defamation and libel; and hence allowed free reporting of the civil rights campaigns in the southern United States. It is one of the key decisions supporting the freedom of the press. ...

a gaffe is when OBama mistakenly said something about 57 states when he meant 47.

she is just a fucking dumbass ignorant asshole. she is the WORST type out there. so sure she is right but so fucking ignorant or anything. and when called on to answer questions she doesn't understand she views it as an attack on her.

Sarah would suck at Trivial Pursuit. Just a feeling. It's embarrassing as an American citizen to see such ignorance about American history on display by someone aspiring to such high office. I don't think Palin could pass a high school competency test. Pathetic.

167. Quarrels That Have Shaped the Constitution
is a good and not too difficult read for anyone who wants to learn more about the Supreme Court cases starting with Marbury v Madison. Obviously our little Sarah has not read it but others on DU might find it interesting. It has been around a while and updated but even the earlier editions are good. It should be in most good sized libraries, but not perhaps in Wasilla, AK.

National Association of Home Builders v. Defenders of Wildlife?

You'd think that someone who is suing over the placement of polar bears on the endangered species list would have done her homework on past court rulings. But I guess that would be assuming that Palin was even REMOTELY competent.
