Last week, Sen. John McCain said that he would suspend his campaign and go to Washington and help to broker a bail-out bill. During the debate with Sen. Barack Obama, he boasted about his success.
"I put my campaign on hold for a couple days last week to fight for a rescue plan that put you and your economic security first," he said. "I fought for a plan that protected taxpayers, homeowners, consumers and small business owners."
Then, on one of the Sunday morning news programs, his campaign strategist Steve Schmidt said "What Senator McCain was able to do was to help bring all of the parties to the table, including the House Republicans, whose votes were needed to pass this."
Then, today, it didn't happen, and it's beginning to look like the senator himself may need a bailout.
Does that mean that McCain should have stayed away from Capitol Hill. Or that he should have stayed there until the vote was taken?
Or, does it tell us:
That he's willing to jump into the political fray even when there is political risk?
That he doesn't garner enough respect within his own party to generate votes?
That he has a tendency to count his chickens before they're hatched?
Or:
All of the above?
(The poor guy couldn't even convince a single member of the ARIZONA delegation to vote with him)
