FLASHBACK: Cheney wanted to cut defense? Say it isn't so!!!

Gee, from what I've heard it was Kerry that cut defense....

Taken from an article posted on the Google newsgroups in 1990:
<snip>
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=cheney+cuts+defense&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&as_drrb=b&as_mind=12&as_minm=5&as_miny=1981&as_maxd=2&as_maxm=9&as_maxy=1993&selm=572.25d7b640%40zodiac.rutgers.edu&rnum=3

ll of Washington claims to want a new U.S. defense strategy, while Defense Secretary Dick Cheney says the one we have is fine. As we inspect his 1991budget request, however, Mr. Cheney does seem to be offering at least the beginnings of a post-Cold War military strategy. Congress - no surprise -
already hates it.

For 40 years, one pillar of U.S. strategy has been defending against a Soviet invasion of Central Europe. This has required an unusually large land Army. With the Warsaw Pact collapsing, Mr. Cheney is proposing cuts in those and supporting forces. The U.S. will gradually return to its more traditional military role as a continental nation, mainly interested in the ability
to project power on the sea, in the air, and increasingly in space.

This oversimplifies, but it captures the direction of Mr. Cheney's
proposals. He wants to cut two Army divisions right away, and three moreby the mid-1990s. He'd close down the production line for the M-1 tank, directing savings to R&D. He'd do away with five tactical air wings designated largely for Army support. And to howls from Congress, he wants to cut as many as 60 domestic bases that aren't needed as this force structure declines. All of this squares with the sensible judgement that the U.S. won't be fighting any Vietnam-style land wars soon.
<snip>
Sooner then you think.....

1. From another thread ....

Posted to Altercation (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3449870 ):

"Zell Miller's speech was utterly disgusting and shameless, full of flat out lies and blatant distortions of John Kerry's record on defense.

John Kerry voted FOR 16 of the 19 Pentagon spending bills while he was in office. Since 1997, Kerry voted FOR every single regular DOD appropriation bill and FOR every authorization bill. John Kerry did NOT specifically vote against the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, did NOT specifically vote against the M1-A ABRAMS tank or the Patriot Missile (he has opposed extension of our nuclear capability, including Star Wars).

Who DID oppose major conventional defense programs? DICK CHENEY.

As Secretary of Defense,
CHENEY called for the elimination of the Apache helicopter,
CHENEY called for the elimination of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle,
CHENEY called for the elimination of the M-1s
CHENEY called for the elimination of the F-14 and the F-16
CHENEY called for the elimination of the B-2 bomber (which Kerry also opposed for its nuclear capabilities).
CHENEY called for the elimination of the MX missile.
CHENEY helped cut the defense budget by $300 BILLION.

Where was Miller's rage at Cheney?

And Miller's claim that Kerry voted against body armor for our troops in Iraq is another disgusting distortion. Kerry voted FOR authorization of the $87 billion to fund our troops in Iraq, but BUSH wanted to veto that version of the bill because it would have reversed Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy to help defer the cost of the war. Kerry, quite consistently, did not approve the way Bush was handling the war, including its funding.

How long will the media allow the Republicans get away with these lies and distortions? I can never recall a political campaign so built on lying about its opponent as the campaign George W. Bush is running."

Save this, print it out, post it everywhere you can, send it to every journalist you know.

2. Which is WHY we have a disaster in Iraq
Because old Cheapskate Cheney and pals were determined to do everything with the least men and least effort we could possibly exert, so they wouldn't have to pay too much in taxes, the lazy selfish SOB's.

3. Another article on Cheney's cuts which Bush Sr. agreed on
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=cheney+cuts+defense&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&as_drrb=b&as_mind=12&as_minm=5&as_miny=1981&as_maxd=2&as_maxm=9&as_maxy=1993&selm=9201300134.AA10493%40afnews.af.mil&rnum=1<snip>

WASHINGTON -- Based on dramatic world events in recent months, Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said the overall size of America's military, defense spending and major programs like the B-2 will see major cuts in the years ahead.

"The disintegration of the Soviet Union has reduced the threat of U.S. interest and eliminated the urgency for proceeding with some of our biggest and most advanced weapons programs," Cheney said in a press conference announcing the fiscal 1993 defense budget, Jan. 29.

"Two years ago I began planning cuts in military spending that reflected the changes of the new era. But now, this year, with imperial communism gone, that process can be accelerated," President Bush said in his State of the Union address Jan. 28.
