Nervous GOP urges McCain to attack
By MIKE ALLEN & JONATHAN MARTIN | 9/30/08 7:02 PM EDT Text Size:

John McCain’s fade in recent polls, combined with a barrage of negative news coverage during the financial crisis, has leading Republican activists around the country worrying about his prospects and urging his campaign to become much more aggressive against Barack Obama in the remaining month before Election Day.

A flurry of new polls shows Barack Obama gaining in several battleground states – most notably Florida, Pennsylvania and swing states throughout the West. Officials worry early voting, which is under way in important states such as Ohio, is likely to favor Obama in this toxic political climate.

Several state GOP chairmen in interviews urged the McCain campaign to be more aggressive in hitting Obama’s vulnerabilities, such as his past relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and other problematic associations from Chicago.

But as September turns to October—Wednesday marks 34 days to the Nov. 4 election—it is clear McCain himself is to blame for the most urgent problems. His snap decision to throw himself into the bailout debate has proven disastrous, since his efforts looked late and half-hearted, and many in the GOP ignored his pleas in Monday’s House vote.

4. I almost hope they do that

it worked in Tn, but nationwide? I think it would backfire big time. All the hardcore racists already know he's black and would not vote for him in a million years. And it would motivate the HELL out of any remaining progressive-but-uninvolved to get registered and VOTE!

And it might be the final death knell for this sick "party'

7. I agree - if they only have the stuff we already know about -bring
it on. O seems pretty squeeky clean - can't imagine anything else out there
of any magnitude.

Ah, the blessings of a long, vetted primary. All the shit is out.

2. Has McCain done anything but attack since August?
I'm missing his ads methodically laying out his detailed, 5 point plans to save the economy, restore our standing in the world and solve our energy problems. Can someone link me the you-tubes of these highly thought provoking, inspirational ads that clearly show McCain's vision for the country? Not sure how I missed them.

5. In fairness, early on there were the POW ads that didn't mention Obama
But other than "I'm the best President because I got shot down" ads I can't think of any.

9. I welcome their attacks on Obama via Wright.
But I wonder, if we couldn't have ads aired questioning McCain's health, how will they get Wright ads aired?

10. I still wonder if the Obama camp had a hand in leaking the Rev. Wright tapes.
They played out at the best possible time for his campaign. He'd already essentially clinched the nomination, and the tapes broke well before the PA primary. It was really the best time for them to be released.

When McCain runs the Wright ads, they'll have some traction, but not enough to throw the election to McCain. The Repubs must be pissed that they couldn't sit on the tapes until mid-October.
