Fred NAILS it - "Electing a Head Case"
I am a long time fan of Fred Reed's column
"Fred On Everything" (www.FredOnEverything.net)

He's like the enlightened Red Neck, who's seen it all...
Or the spiritual surrogate for Hunter S. Thompson.

His piece for this week, just nails it:

Is McCain Able ?

"Electing a Head Case"
October2, 2008

I frankly don’t believe John McCain's medical records, or at any rate the portions released to the New York Times. The man was held in solitary for years, tortured until bones fractured, until he confessed to war crimes, until he tried to hang himself.

That he broke can’t be held against him: Almost anyone would have. (In my view GIs should be told to confess to anything whatever right from the start.) But the assertion that he came through unscathed, warm and humorous and psychically sound, just isn’t plausible. It doesn’t happen that way.

Now, PTSD. A lot of people, including vets, don’t believe that PTSD exists. I didn’t. One reason is that they tend to think of it as something verging on the psychotic, as for example seeing nonexistent snipers in the hedgerows of suburban Philadelphia. The other common notion is that those who have it dive under tables at the sound of a backfire. Vets tend to think, "I don't know anybody like that. I certainly don’t see snipers in the rafters. This whole PTSD business sounds like a crock."

So it does. But it isn’t.

but no one knows except for my husband and a couple of close friends. I've become quite adept at hiding my symptoms.

4. I have a nephew with PTSD (Gulf War I)
and I've been trying to get him to talk to these people...

Heard about them on Thom Hartmann's radio show. You might read up on what they are doing.

6. How very cool !
How did you come to meet him ?

Were you able to have an interesting conversation ?

What I've liked about his postings are how raw they are,
he doesn't pull any punches, and has no fear to express
himself fully.

The original Straight Shooter - not to be confused with
the occupant of the Straight Talk Suppress.

5. These points aren't brought up often enough.
It wouldn't take much publicity for this to come up in most people's minds when they hear McCain talk about his POW experiences. It would become a feedback loop.

7. I think this is a wonderful piece!
You get so much information about PTSD from us mental health types, and I am pretty sure it gets ignored. I would if I had been in combat and had to listen to someone who has not been through what I had been through.

But what I really want to say, with all honesty and no snark whatsoever, is why does this even need to be said? This man was held captive and tortured for five YEARS. That is not something that you just walk away from and you are fine. That impacts you for the rest of your life. Certainly not always in negative ways, but it has a tremendous impact. But I would not doubt he has flashbacks, or wakes up sweating, confused and terrified reliving that nightmarish hell where he was left to rot. That he carries emotional and psychological scars really should just be a given after what he survived. I think a better question would be for McCain: What are the scars you carry and what hurts do you hide from the voters? We have a right to know about this too in our President.

14. Problem is...
from everything I've read about John McCain, he was ALWAYS a narcissistic a**hole. Never cared about anyone but himself. Known as McNasty in HS, I think. Read Rolling Stone's article about him.
