Public funding limits pushed McCain out of Michigan

Barack Obama’s decision to forego public funding for his presidential campaign helped force John McCain to withdraw from Michigan, abandoning an important strategic objective, said a McCain adviser.

The withdrawal was a painful decision for Sen. McCain (Ariz.), the GOP presidential nominee, who spent nearly $8 million to advertise in the state.

McCain strategists decided, however, that they had to pull out of Michigan to keep up with Sen. Obama (Ill.), the Democratic nominee, who has been allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts on the general election because he opted out of public funds.

McCain has had to adhere to spending limits because he accepted public funds for his campaign after winning the GOP nomination in September.

Obama’s campaign reported $77.4 million in cash on hand at the end of August. McCain reported $26.9 million in the bank at the same time.

1. They're bleeding cash
They expected a five state race. They got a 12-14 state race. They have no budget for that at all. The bottom is falling out of the McCain campaign.

2. Exactly right.
McCain was expecting to only fight on the battleground front.

13. The RNC can step in
but with so many contested races around the country with Senate and House members they need to fund those also. They are between a rock and a Palin.

3. Rec'd~ They should have listened to Howard Dean, baby!
We care about all 50 States and will try and get in play as many as humanly possible with the funds from The People:)

If mccain had a solid foundation instead of bush policy he wouldn't have to pull out of Michigan. Maybe if he had chosen mitt romney..who knows?

11. Barack Obama is the smartest political scientist alive today
He knew that he could win "this thing" with the right message and a fully-enabled activist following. He must have had some intuition that the upper middle class would fund him bodaciously.

Paul Wellstone, RIP. I see parts of the Wellstone method in Obama's campaign, such as the retail politics of a get out the vote campaign.

7. Thing is, even if he HAD opted out of public financing, he'd still be outta money.
The man just does not have the ability to raise money the way Obama has. It's why he went with public finance in the first place.

9. He also doesn't have the foresight to use technology to benefit him,
and it seems his campaign doesn't either. The man doesn't use a computer or have the foggiest idea how important technology is; that is hurting him enormously.

8. So his basically confirms that it was not a trap.
But of course Obama has the $$ to continue there. Apparently McLame can't even think of stealing previous blue states like mine. He ought to pull out of PA then. I'd be glad to get rid of the bunch of them!

He's got bigger fish to fry to hold VA, NC, NM, CO, and most importantly, FL!

10. Obama made the right decision to dump public financing.
In spite of many, even in his own party, criticizing him for it. Short sighted fools.
