2. No southerners on the ticket. First neutral election in decades here.
Since there's nothing to draw Texas loyalty, people are less decided.

"NYT: Who You Callin’ a Maverick?"

By JOHN SCHWARTZ
Published: October 4, 2008

There’s that word again: maverick. In Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican candidate, used it to describe herself and her running mate, Senator John McCain, no fewer than six times, at one point calling him “the consummate maverick.”

But to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch — and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive.

“I’m just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,” said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants.

Considering the family’s long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, “is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.”

“It’s just incredible — the nerve! — to suggest that he’s not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, ‘Oh, my God, he said it again.’ ”

“He’s a Republican,” she said. “He’s branded.”

32. Agree to the Rep lean. Subtract 5 points for their weighting
and that makes it 4 pts. which puts it within the MOE.

14. McLame seems to have taken Texans for granted
And he's paying for it. Probably too late for him to play catch up now. Too many new voters registered thru lots and LOTS of voter registration drives.
Texas' volunteer deputy registrars measure their weekends by how many voters they registered at drives set up at stores, clubs, festivals, mass transit centers, coffee shops...pick any public place and they have been there. For months now.

Edited on Sun Oct-05-08 11:21 PM by Erin Elizabeth
I'm tellin' ya, I've been watching things here for years. Every election cycle, it gets a bit better. I think we've registered half a million new voters in Texas this cycle.

Hells yeah.

On edit: I'm not saying Texas will be blue this year. But it's definitely been trending that direction. Demographically speaking, that's where we're headed.

19. As a national tred, that's cool ...

As a national trend, that's cool as it likely reflects general dissatisfaction of McCain with voters. However, it's a 9 point lead (as little as 6, as much as 12). Call me when the lead gets down to 6 proper and McCain has to launch a ground operation in order to hold the state.

The battleground states are white on that map: Florida, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, Nevada, Colorado and MISSOURI. Wow ... MISSOURI!!!! If it comes to a point where Texas goes to 5%, McCain will have lost all these other states and the election will be over with.

20. So a question to everyone who responded - could Texas get even lighter pink?
It's a radical thought, but it wasn't long ago that NC had just turned pink and I thought that maybe we'd break even and turn white right before the election - just barely squeaking those 15 EVs for Obama.

It's like watching the promise made in the primaries come to be. I tried to reassure people who were unsure about Obama that his campaign was running like a well-oiled machine. It's just amazing to watch and breathtaking to be a part of.

22. I'm thinking the phrase "Texas: too close to call"
on election night is a real possibilty. New voter registration and energy/interest is thru the roof if what I am seeing at local drives is the same statewide. I don't think the polls we are seeing online reflect that group yet.

23. Texas will definitely take a few more cycles to change probably.
But I think that it will definitely be nice to see it become competitive again. McCain is holding on for dear life at this point. Only Utah is safe for him, really. lol

28. That site isn't exactly the best source of electoral polling info..
because it only uses the latest poll instead of a compilation of many polls. I prefer

http://pollster.com/

which shows Texas as strong Republican still, and I suspect that's really the case.

29. Look at texas BY County in 2000

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/2000_election_county_by_county/

For 2004:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/

Notice the Rio Grande Valley, heavy Democratic. The 2004 Map is based on how far the GOP and Democratic counties went Democratic or GOP, notice the Rio Grande Valley is almost solid Blue, while most of the rest of the state is Bluish-Red (Except Central Texas and west, solid Red). Very Easy to switch Texas Blue, all you need to do is keep the Democratic Voter going to the polls and the GOP voters staying home OR worse some GOP voters voting against the GOP.
