Joe six pack is not going to understand the Keating5 scandal
That's why Obama should instead focus on McCain's extremely close relationship to G. Gordon Liddy....a convicted felon, admitted that he was ready, willing and able to kill for Nixon, and has prepared materials instructing people how to kill FBI agents.

People will understand this alot better than the Keating5 scandal and a 13 minute video exlaining the scandal. Most people have ADD and will not be able to sit through 13 minutes of a video describing banking laws and regulations.

1. Have you seen the video? I think many will sit through and listen to Keating 5
because it is quite relevant to the shit hitting the fan today...

2. they don't need to understand the scandal itself
they just need to know that it was something bad and McCain was involved.

5. Precisely
They only need to understand, bad judgment, corruption and abuse of power. The details really come down to that in the end in my opinion.

3. How about cheating on his first wife?
That should play well with the Idiocracy crowd. Maybe dig up some old flames from before he hooked up with Cindy.

6. The primary goal is to blunt McCain's attacks by suffocating their airtime.
Instead of letting McCain's attacks go unchallenged, or challenged with a soundbyte, bringing up the Keating 5 is going to force the news media to use their precious airtime explaining to the public what the Keating 5 scandal was all about.

Every minute they do that is a minute John McCain is under assault, and a minute not devoted to McCain's attacks.

10. It's simple: McCain was bribed to deregulate & block an investigation while Keating stole millions.
It relates to today because McCain still pushes deregulation and he's surrounded by lobbyists who throw money at McCain.

14. I disagree. K5 builds on what the MSM's been covering for 3 wks--see LINK
http://www.keatingeconomics.com/

People ALREADY understand depositors losing their life savings, as more than 20,000 did at Lincoln Savings and Loan in 1989, thanks to "deregulation" and corrupt politicians.

People ALREADY understand how deregulation McCain championed in the past 9 years and 25 years ago let banks run wild, how turning banks into risky casinos courts catstrophe, and how taxpayers get stuck with hundreds of billions in bailouts when the bubble bursts. Plus, they ALREADY understand about big supporters' corruption of politicians, who intervene with already weakened regulators to help their benefactors.

People WILL understand that letters McCain wrote to regulators on behalf of Charles Keating helped him continue and widen his bank fraud at the expense of 20,000 depositiors who lost everything and at the cost of a $3 billion bailout just for Keating's bank corporation.

The website linked above lays out all these elements of K5 in half a page, and links to all the relevant documents.

And people aren't having any problems understanding what's happening right now.

17. Mmm... I dunno about that.
It's all pretty complicated. Most people probably think of it as "Greedy Wall Street messed up". Fortunately, that's also the simplest way of viewing the Keating scandal.

18. At this point, I don't think any "undecided" voters are Joe Six-packers
We're not going after Joe SixPack votes anymore. If they want to break for McCain, fine.

The goal is the more attentive folks who WILL understand this stuff, but are just tuning in. They were too busy for all the primary drama so they are still not clear on where Obama and McCain stand. We are now ready to peel off those last bit of pesky votes.

A month before this election, it seems to me that this will be understandable by many people.

... J6P has no problem with Liddy, where the hell have your been.

J6P doesn't have to understand the nuances of the Keating scandal, only that Keating got special treatment in exchange for campaign contributions.

24. I know I'll get flamed but
I understand exactly what the OP is saying. The Keating 5 scandal *is* much more complex than the simple idea that Obama hangs out with terrorists. (I already wrote to the Obama campaign and posted a thread here on how I would respond to McCain's attacks.)

25. We make it simple...
When a crooked banker needed favors from Congress, he went to five crooked politicians. John McCain was bought and paid for by Keating, and he did what Keating wanted him to do. An thousands of people lost their life savings as a result.

Pretty simple, huh?
