3. Not necessarily, there is "winter white"
Of course, white belts and shoes never look good on men, and definitely should stop at the end of summer for women.

Why do you ask?

was a weather thing.....snow and all.

4. You should dress for the weather, not for the date.
If it's 100 degrees in Palm Springs, you can wear white.

If it's 65 degrees in New York, don't wear white.

10. White shoes....
...that is the general rule.

White pants if wool are cool after Labor Day...but not white summer pants. And, of course, a white blouse is OK in all seasons.

:hi:

However, those rules do not apply to areas that are tropical in climate in the US such as the Calif Desert or in most of Fla.

Sorry about what sounds like a lesson, but my mother was a sorority girl in the 40s and Junior League all the way. I learned the dumbest stuff from her when I was a kid and some times it just does NOT go away!

13. this is not limited to sorority girls and Junior League. My mom who was neither
was steadfast on white shoes between Labor Day and Easter.Verboten.

So was every other woman I ever knew.

I still will not wear white shoes after Labor Day or before Easter, unless it is sneakers.

White wool is OK in winter, and off white is ok in the shoe area.

21. I am in my 60s....
...so my mom, if she were alive, would be well into her 80s now. So...a question: Are you and your mom in the same general age group? Maybe it was a 50s and 60s thing more than anything else?

And, yeah, tennies were cool all year ~~ I used to use white shoe polish on mine...LOL...does that ever go back about 40+ years!

:hi:

29. 59 and holding. Most definitely NOT a 50s and 60s thing though, as
my mother learned it from her mother, and so on.

Now I have been told the origin of all this is that white leather was very expensive and scarce and difficult to keep clean. Therefore it was not worn in the messier times of year.

I have also been told that way back when, it was not Easter that was the season beginning for white shoes, but Derby Day, which occurs later in the Spring when weather is warmer and usually drier.

Besides, it just looks like summer, to wear white shoes with a soft cool dress. The only time I have seen white shoes in winter that looked appropriate was on the feet of a bride.

LOL first day on my first job here in Texas, mid December and cold; walked in the room and a young girl was standing there wearing a black sweater, black and white houndstooth check wool skirt, black tights and white shoes.

I nearly gagged, due to holding back the eruption of belly laughing that came over me...those white pointed toe flats against those thick black tights made her feet look like BOATS. I guess she thought white shoes were OK because the skirt was black and white, but a nice black shoe would have looked much more finished out.

24. And I learned white shoes are only to be worn with a white hemline
If your pants or skirt is white, white shoes are okay. Your shoes should never be lighter than your hemline. I still go by that, as silly as it sounds.

And up here, other than "winter white", no white after Labor Day. :)

OK, sorry to all the folks from Alaska. It's not like you have a Sak's, Bloomingdales or Barney's. Where do you get your clothes? I mean, parkas are the norm for how many months of the year?

In fact, I got my Obama merchandise at the West Volusia demo campaign headquarters.

Where do you live in Deland? My daughter works at the Northgate Publix.

Sure hope we see some changes in Volusia County. My wife has been very active in the Susan Kosmas campaign - sure need to get rid of Feeney.

And of course I know this because my mother told me about a hundred times, along with "Your handbag must coordinate with your shoes and belt" and a few other related goodies.

30. I won't write what I was going to write, because it would be inflammatory.
But let's just say that there are certain professions... certain geographies.. and certain groups in which white is always worn (and I'm thinking of the latter.)
