REWARD: Can Anyone Anywhere Find One Person With a Palin's Accent and Colloquialisms?
I am offering a reward to anyone anywhere who can produce just ONE (1) more person who talks like Sarah Palin,
any one person anywhere--even her kids or husband, one person who used BOTH that accent and her trailer-park colloquialisms.

I'm calling this great and unprecedented distinction (drum roll .....) "The Political Howl Award".
It is a traveling cyber trophy with no physical form, and yet of inestimable significance in future political lore.
The winner (which I doubt we shall have) will be duty bound to pass it on by offering it to someone else
in the form of another open, online competition intended to uncover and prove a political a deception of the public.

Good luck!

PS. The movie Fargo does not count!! REAL persons only.

27. I was in Alaska this summer, and I don't recall any of the locals sounding like her.
They sounded more like folks from Seattle or Oregon, maybe with a dash of Canadian.

8. I'd say Palin's more along the lines with William H. Macy's character, 'Jerry' Lundegaard

PALIN: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie - that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

COURIC: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

PALIN: He's also known as the maverick, though. Taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about — the need to reform government.

COURIC: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

PALIN: Ma'am, I answered your question!

COURIC: I'm sorry, Governor?

PALIN: Ma'am, I answered your question. I answered the darned... I'm cooperatin' here!

COURIC: Governor, you have no call to get snippy with me, I'm just doing my job here.

PALIN: I'm... I'm not arguing here! I'm cooperating. And there's no ... we're doin' all we can.

COURIC: I'm just going to ask you one more time, not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation?

PALIN: Well, heck, if you wanna play games here! I'm workin' with ya on this thing here, but, okay... I'll try to find ya some, and I'll bring 'em to ya.

COURIC: Governor? Right now?

PALIN: Yeah, right now! You're darned tootin'! If it's so damned important to ya!

*Palin gets up and storms off to the parking lot. Couric looks out the window and sees the Governor driving off in her car.*

COURIC: Oh for Pete's sake, she's fleeing the interview! She's fleeing the interview!

11. I agree. I'm really tired of the Marge Gunderson/Sarah Palin comparisons.
When Marge speaks, she actually has something to say.

...the Lundergaard character's but as for what she sounds like (or tries to sound like), I'm sticking with Marge. I loved your take on the interview, though.

10. She sounds much like Edie McClurg
but without the vocal training and good modulation. Edie is an actress, but the accent is her real voice. She's in a million things.

say "I think John McCain is a righteous dude!" in that same voice. People always get the comparison.

19. I have heard people here in Wisconsin who talk like her Mat-Su Valley English accent
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 11:01 AM by zulchzulu
Not being originally from here in WI, I first noticed the accent, which is really more of a Minnesota meets Canadian accent. Oddly, I have also heard that accent even in more rural parts of Pennsylvania.

There have been a number of relocation programs for people in Minnesota to Alaska during hard economic times last century, hence making the accent prevalent in parts of Alaska.

Her accent has been discussed by lingoists:

The dialect which has caused so much fervor here is what might be termed “Mat-Su Valley English”, after the Matnuska and Susitna Valleys where it is spoken. Palmer was a colony settled by immigrants from Minnesota and surrounding regions, and hence they brought their characteristic dialect with them. It has been merged over time with the predominant white dialects to form Mat-Su Valley English which differs only somewhat from generic Alaskan English. Sarah Palin speaks this Mat-Su Valley English, as do some friends of mine who grew up in Palmer and Wasilla, but I have other friends born and raised there that speak Alaskan English instead, so it’s not homogeneous. This again is due to pressure from the English of surrounding areas, particularly Anchorage.

BUT, does anyone, just ONE person, actually talk like her there? If so, I want to see a video!!

30. I found one!
Linda Menard from Wasilla, running for the seat that Lyda Green is vacating in the state senate, was on our local news last night giving her pitch, and I swear she sounded like Sarah. She is a Sarah supporter, after all, so maybe she's picking up her speech patterns deliberately.

Check her out here http://www.ktuu.com/global/video/flash/popupplayer.asp?ClipID1=2997792&h1=District%20G%20Senate%20seat%20between%202%20newcomers&vt1=v&at1=Video%20Player&d1=163433&LaunchPageAdTag=Homepage&activePane=info&rnd=61136491

It's right after the "Alaska Grown" commercial and the intro by the news people.

33. Yes, there is an accent, but it is not the one Palin is using.
Palin is so over the top with colloquialisms and seemingly exaggeration of the inflections.

I'm thinking Palin's accent is NOT authentic, even in Wasilla.
I guess we need a roving video in Wasilla to check the locals out.
