McCain attorney describes McCain and Keating as “social friends” - a "classic political smear job"

http://thepage.time.com/2008/10/06/american-history-lesson-keating-edition/

McCain attorney John Dowd attempts to set the record straight on McCain and the Keating Five scandal in a media call.

Describes his former relationship with Charles Keating as “social friends,” calls situation a “classic political smear job on John.”

Thinks that the committee went too far in suggesting that McCain’s intervention with regulators was poor judgment.

3. Social friends with a convicted Felon?
We've got news for you, John McCain.....

your ties with Charles Keating are clearly documented, and you were more than involved, which is why you were made to testify.

History will not be rewritten for your sorry ass.

When did socializing earn one a hearing in front of Congress?

6. Good. I hope the Obama campaign keeps the pressure on about Keating.
Make McCain have to stay on the defensive.

7. Keating Was Giving McCain Rides On His Private Jet...
And was one of McCain's biggest contributors! What was McCain doing in all those meetings with S&L regulators? That's more than just a casual friend.

9. Social friends? McCain took gifts and favors and donations from the guy--
Keating didn't shower him with this shit because they were just "buds"--who do they think they're fooling?

10. It' just as bad if they were just "social friends,"
Maybe even worse, since it shows that these are the kinds of people McCain socializes with and considers his peers. He intervened on behalf of his "social friend" and it costs US tax-payers a lot of money. But he is not willing to intervene on behalf of ordinary citizens, and that really tells us everything we need to know.

12. So the intimate conversation that John McNutJob had with
Keating meant nothing? It's guilt by association and can result in a guilty verdict in a court of law.

14. How many people spend their family vacation staying with "social
friends" in their house, eating their food, using their cars and boats? How many people and their families are flown, at their "social friends'" expense.

Naw, don't fly.

He knew what he was doing, and it wasn't social.

Charlie Keating always took care of his friends, especially those in politics. McCain was no exception.

In 1982, during McCain's first run for the House, Keating held a fund-raiser for him, collecting more than $11,000 from 40 employees of American Continental Corp. McCain would spend more than $550,000 to win the primary and the general election.

In 1983, as McCain contemplated his House re-election, Keating hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner for him, even though McCain had no serious competition. When McCain pushed for the Senate in 1986, Keating was there with more than $50,000.

By 1987, McCain had received about $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.

McCain also had carried a little water for Keating in Washington. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to delay new regulations designed to curb risky investments by thrifts such as Lincoln.

21. You know.. I just LOVE to "holiday" with my social friends..
Buffy & Todd always come with us up to the Hamptons on the weekends during the summer, and we have such a grand old time. I do hope that we get to see them again soon.. smooooches!

:sarcasm:

Social Friends? Dude, you took your wife, kids & the babysitter down to Keatings place in the Caribbean to vacation.. that's not just going out to dinner.

And, further - what other kind of friends are there? "Ohh.. the Johnsons? Well, they're our UN-SOCIAL Friends".. :eyes:
