Tax Profs Agree: Gov. Palin's Tax Returns Are Wrong

http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2008/10/tax-profs-agree.html

Jack Bogdanski, There's No Debate: Palins Owe Thousands in Back Taxes:

There is no serious debate (at least, none that has been brought to our attention) about the fact that at least the amounts paid for the children's travel -- $24,728.83 in 2007, according to the Washington Post -- are taxable. The campaign's tax lawyer has got at least that much of the law, and perhaps more, wrong. ... The Palins, who had their tax returns done by HR Block, simply got it wrong. And the fact that the state payroll office got it wrong, too, doesn't erase the Palins' unpaid tax liability.

Oh yeah, and you're probably going to get nailed for abuse of power when the Troopergate report comes out on Friday.

But you just keep on winking and chirping and lobbing lies at Obama. At least you'll have the memories when you get impeached.

2. That's weird, you'd think they would use a real attorney or accountant or something.

7. Smart move.
H&R Block promises to stand up for you if returns they prepare turn out to be wrong, and the IRS would tend to lean less heavily on a taxpayer who appears to have been screwed over by a preparer. That should delay charges of income tax evasion, anyway.

8. Any reputable accounting firm will do that
In fact the more of a name (connected) one you get the more they will cover you. They are in the business and get paid for protecting those with money and power.

I am amazed that firms weren't falling all over themselves to do their taxes. It is a great name to drop, there, in conversation and presentations to potential clients.

5. Jack was a well respected tax prof at my law school - in fact,
his ability and knowledge of tax scared me so much that I took my tax classes from a lesser god while there, lol. I may have wanted to be a lawyer, but NOT a tax lawyer.

I'll hit his blog and see what else the dude will dig up - should be good.

9. It would be counted as income for anyone else except the governor of Alaska.
What is wrong with this picture?

Everytime I fill out an expense statement for reimbursement for university travel they emphasize that we have to deduct normal daily commute miles and that per diem is only paid for days actually spent overnight away from home. The government in Alaska can designate all the "duty stations" they want, if she was commuting from home, any per diem paid is taxable income. Case closed.

14. Ummm... if indeed, according to McCain, Palin was "vetted"
why didn't the campaign bother to look at the damned tax returns!

I know, I know: she wasn't vetted. This is just exhibit Z proving the fact.

But god, McCain's campaign is apparently run by idiots. Or an idiot.
