Since when did Chicago become a dirty word?
I've never been there, but it seems like a nice enough place.

Is it Al Capones fault? Walt Disney? The Blues Brothers? Is deep dish the pizza of the devil?

5. CHICAGO RULES

But since its a big city with lots of different ethnic shapes and colors, they are all terrorists. Remember in 2004...? Massachusetts was 'elite Liberal, out of touch with mainstream America', and now Chicago is as well. the Reps dont win either state so they have nothing to lose by marginalizing it.

But Illinois? The LAND OF LINCOLN? The masses hopefully are no longer buying this bullshit anymore.

Those are two great American cities that the GOP despises. They pretty much hate ALL the great American cities since the people who live there don't swallow their lies so easy.

Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 04:54 PM by MookieWilson
Italian/Irish and Poles are in greater competition for things conservatives want.

If you want a city folks hate/fear for racial reasons, choose Balitmore, which has a reputation for being a 'black' city. Richmond, VA also.

Chicago is known, mostly, as an Irish town.

48. Unfortunately, no.
I am pretty familiar with Chicago because I had relatives and have friends who live there. However, I grew up in Western Lower Michigan and missed a whole lot.

A good friend of mine lives in Chicago and is half Lithuanian. She and I took a "roots" trip several years ago. Needless to say, it involved a fascinating Lithuanian segment as well as a Swedish sojourn.

I would have loved to see the Lithuanian folk dances, though! Didn't see any on the trip.

But, since when are Republicans opposed to kickbacks, bribery, etc? I think they're just mad they aren't in on the game there.

The truth is, Obama OVERCAME the Chicago political network. He didn't benefit from it. His first loss in Chicago politics was a wake up call that an outsider has very little, if any, chance of making inroads into what is very much a closed network. Unless, of course, he has the air of destiny that Obama comes with. People are responding to Obama because they know he's real. McCain is just now realizing that he can't fight that, so he's trying like hell to throw anything at him that might create doubt. That might have worked when people didn't know Obama. But, at this point in the game, people see it for the desperate attempt to detract from the issues that it is.

http://www.slate.com/id/91350/

Even before Election Day, rumors circulated about fraud, especially in Chicago, where Mayor Richard Daley's machine was known for delivering whopping Democratic tallies by fair means and foul. When it became clear how narrowly Nixon lost, outraged Republicans grew convinced that cheating had tipped the election and lobbied for an investigation.

27. when they started putting pickles on their hot dogs?
I think Chicago is a new code word, meaning "like San Francisco but more Black and not as Gay".

Chicago has a long history of political activism, including the Haymarket Riots in 1886 (and the Lager Beer Riots in 1855 - thanks, Wikipedia). A number of social movements started there, like Addams' Hull House settlement, muckrakers like Upton Sinclair used the conditions at the stockyards to get food regulations overhauled - in short, it's a progressive, dynamic, culturally-rich city and despite Chicago's historical significance for Republicans they don't like that.

32. Personally, I hate Chicago.
But it's a beautiful city. It's just too congested if you ask me. You really have to like that to spend any time there. The last time I was there, a couple of years ago, I stayed at the Whitehall, and parking was a nightmare. I eventually valeted my car, for $35.00 a day! I would never want to live there though. Downtown, you really need to like to walk, because you'll be doing a lot of that to get arround.

38. As someone who lives outside the city, I must take exception to some of your statements
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 05:04 PM by mizzuzmojorizin
Obviously, if you are lodging downtown you are going to be in the midst of all the action. An alternative could be to stay in a nearby suburb with a bed and breakfast (as well as history of its own to explore) and use public transit to go into the city if you would like. As for your comment regarding needing a car or liking to walk, um...did you not see those El tracks overhead? And they also have trolleys (I think they may be free, too!) to shuttle people around the downtown area. And walking is a wonderful activity, anyway.

One more thing about Chicago: it's a series of neighborhoods. Many are not very congested at all and are indistinguishable from suburbs.

There is a perception still around the world about Chicago's gangster past. Also, it (and surrounding areas) has the nickname 'Crook County' for all the patronage and other corruption going down. But I love Chicago dearly. And I am proud to say that Obama is from here!

46. Chicago Style Politics
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 05:27 PM by kennetha
Dating back to the days of Boss Daley has always been rough and tumble. Harold Washington ran against the Machine and pretty much crushed it. Haven't lived in Chicago since then. But I gather the younger Daley is nothing like his old man -- but like his old man looks like he his mayor for life. Lifetime tenure in a political office almost certainly breeds corruption.

49. "Chicago" is the new "San Francisco"

Of course, it's not one of those awful "east coast" cities like Boston, New York or Philadelphia. Or, say, one of those places like DC where so-called "conservatives" have cocktail parties.

These people just hate America. I can't figure out why.

It's like figuring out a terrorist campaign - which city to the Repukes want to bomb next.
