1999-McCain Admits Role In Keating 5: "It Was The Wrong Thing To Do & It Will Be On My Tombstone"

Back in 1999, John McCain acknowledged his role in the 1980's Keating Five savings and loan scandal that rightly stained his career. "The fact is," he said, "it was the wrong thing to do, and it will be on my tombstone and deservedly so." But again facing withering criticism as a second financial crisis grips the United States, his campaign today instead claimed McCain's intervention 20 years ago with federal regulators on behalf of future convicted felon Charles Keating was merely "a political smear job."

2. To make sure that his Arizona constituent, Charles Keating, was being treated fairly by regulators.
That's how McCain's lawyer accounts for McCain's actions.
Hysterical
Dowd said because of the size of Keating's bank in Arizona, McCain had a duty to be involved, but the Arizona senator "threw Keating out of his office" when the banker pushed hard for McCain's interference.

"Charlie Keating was an important constituent in Arizona that employed 2,000 people, and that's a constituency you pay attention to," Dowd said.

4. On his tombstone...? No...no...no. That's much too late. He should be so lucky.

Political tombstones are not respecters of any physical longevity.
