Richard Clarke is wondering what Osama bin Laden might do to help McCain win in November.
Richard Clarke openly muses that al-Qaeda may try to influence the US Presidential election, saying that “At the very least” we should “expect another Halloween video from the scary man in the cave.”

Even more likely is the possibility that al Qaeda would hope the attack would benefit John McCain. Opinion polls, which, as noted above, al Qaeda reads closely, suggest that an attack would help McCain. Polls in Europe and the Middle East also suggest an overwhelming popular support there for Barack Obama. Al Qaeda would not like it if there were a popular American president again.

Yeah, we knew that... but it's startling when one of the top counterintelligence experts in terrorism in the world says it, too.

6. I agree. Clark should be interviewed by everyone so that
people can build up an immunity to scare tactics. Then again they may be so worried about their jobs, food, housing, etc. that a bin laden tape won't even phase them.

2. And why would Al-Qaeda want to benefit the warlord party?
That defies logic...

3. Because they want America to be hated by the rest of the world...
...and, especially in the Arab world, to have a U.S. President who's an even bigger neo-con and Likudnik supporter than Bush. It makes recruiting for jihad much easier.

12. I like to think such radicalism
is in the minority among Islamists, although as I say below, you're right that you can't discount the sociopathic factor of radical movements.

9. War is a wonderful recruiting tool

For terrorist organizations. McCain will prolong the war in Iraq, and perhaps start a new one (or two). That would be great news for Bin Laden and his ilk. Peace would be bad for business.

11. While I'm sure there's conflicting sentiment
among Islamists about that, I see your point. Can't discount the sociopathic factor among radical movements.

4. And, of course, if the administration got wind of another attack...
...and knew that, if they stopped it, Obama would become president while, if they stood down and allowed it to proceed, McCain would probably win, I'm sure they could be trusted to "do the right thing."

:sarcasm:

7. Al Qaeda is not stupid.

It's evil, but it's not stupid.

Obama has a large lead in the polls, unlike Kerry. If there's an Osama-Cave-Tape-Premiere a few days before the election, Obama instantly records a message denouncing it in the strongest terms, reiterating his promise to KILL Bin Laden and placing the blame in no uncertain terms at the feet of the Bush administration & McCain for FAILING to dispose of him already, instead preferring to piss away resources in Iraq.

If there's an actual attack, the Republican policies have failed to keep us safe again. Again, Obama makes note of this and smashes Mc100Years into the ground.

It would be different if McCain had the polling edge, but when most people back a particular candidate they will hear them more clearly than they do his opponent.

As for them not wanting a popular US President at any cost, well, the fact of the matter is that Bush - temporarily - had just about the entire world onside immediately following 9/11. For he and his administration to successfully piss away mountains of good will and assistance by behaving as they did over the following years, well, that really took some doing.

8. This is BAR NONE the thing that worries me most moving forward
The McCain campaign has proven to be a flop. They can't win without something else influencing election day and all it would take is one well placed car bomb for the sheeple to scurry back to their fear mongering masters i.e. McCain, Bush, the GOP.

15. Given that every video coming from the Cave sports a dif Osama
each time, I think we can handle another 'message'. This is so obviously a covert U.S. friendly operation that makes these videos... I wish someone with video experience here would splice the group of them together to show just how stupid these efforts are.

Osama was reported dead December 2001. His funeral was viewed from satellite photos. He's dead. That's why we can't go get him. Every one else in the world knows this but Americans because our press is not doing its job.

He's dead. Did I say that already?
