"Keep The N*gger Out Of Office"
Cops: Man threatened voter officials over tardy registration card

OCTOBER 8--Angered by a delay in the receipt of his voter registration card, a Louisiana man today threatened election officials, claiming that he urgently needed to cast a ballot to "keep the nigger out of office," according to police. Wade Williams, 75, was arrested this morning on a felony terrorizing charge after allegedly calling the Registrar of Voters and warning that he would come to the state office and empty his shotgun unless he got his registration card. Using profanity and racial slurs, Williams told a state official "about needing to vote to 'keep the nigger out of office," according to an Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office affidavit, a copy of which you'll find here. Though the document does not name the candidate to which Williams is so violently opposed, it seems likely he was referring to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. After being arrested at his Monroe home, Williams was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center, where the below mug shot was snapped. En route to the jail, he "continued his 'tirade' about niggers and also stated that he had a shotgun, but had it hidden at his residence," reported Lt. Michael Judd. (2 pages)

15. It's 2008, but this country is still in its infancy.
It's going to take another century or two before we can be as open-minded as Europe on some of this stuff.

28. I don't think the 'country' is....
just some of it's people. Clearly the majority of people are not like this, otherwise Obama wouldn't be where he is. I guess I take exception to the 'country' part of your statement. (kind of broad)

44. Just remember -- there have been (and maybe still are) those on DU
who defended "Southern heritage."

The racist culture that could have been significantly diminished in this country was allowed to perpetuate itself for more than a century after the Civil War. Four or five or six more generations were able to grow up and intensify their racist attitudes. I have a 70-year-old acquaintance, an Ohio native and retired IBM executive who lived and worked for years in Europe who still has the most revolting racist attitudes, whose political speech these days is peppered with "that word." And as long as he has political "leaders" like McCain and Palin who condone, even tacitly, that kind of attitude, it will not go away.

45. I think that presuming that Europe IS in fact open-minded is a bit of a stretch
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 10:45 AM by Spider Jerusalem
I suppose you haven't heard about the blatant racism of various groups of European football hooligans, for instance? It's not uncommon at all for supporters of some teams to scream racist abuse at black players; several teams in Spain have been subject to fines because of this sort of behaviour by their fans. And there are quite a number of far-right racist and anti-Semitic political parties in Europe that are a good deal more open about there views than most far-right American parties (see for instance the British National Party, Jean-Marie le Pen's National Front in France, Jörg Haider's Freedom Party in Austria, the NPD in Germany, etc).

Europe is, compared to the US, overwhelmingly white, and racial tensions where they exist tend to be much greater and also much more in the open.

I would rather avoid that over here, thanks, even if it means you have a few shitbag racists like this guy around.

12. It's exactly how Ohio is.
Small wonder why Ohio is the last B-ground state who's barely blue/dead even. I guess "nawt wantin' t'catch teh blaaaaaaack" is more important than, you know, making this country solvent, not sending your sons and daughters to be killed for Kellogg Brown and Root and putting us on the path to better health care.

that IF you think the racists are all in "this" older generation, like the guy who got arrested...then you got some learnin' to do...I know those in the 30 yr old group...and in the 15 yr old group...who are just as racist as this old guy is, AND they aren't from the South either..wb

23. Sounds like the Republicans I've argued with over the years about racism being alive and well
may have to FINALLY ADMIT THAT IT IS ALIVE AND WELL.

I have often wondered why it is so hard to admit that racism is hell on black people especially when it is unexpressed. I'd rather hear the ugliness coming out of that bigot's mouth than have the some of these presumptions weigh against me without being able to substantiate the racism.

He just longs for a simplier time in America...when gub'ment didn't take his guns, when communism was the biggest enemy, when fags kept from pushing 'their lifestyle onto the rest of us', when "God" was respected, when we prayed in schools, and when the local sport was to catch a ni^^er and see how high up in a tree you could get him.

/sarcasm

People like this draw no sympathy for me.

Aside from New Orleans, Louisiana is one of the worst places in the Union ("fuck Unions" - average Republican). The place is a cess-pool of Bush-loving redneck stupidity (no offense to Bush).

33. Even after this I doubt Palin/MCain will change their tune.
They can put out all the "we done condone this" paper statements all they want, but ultimately they don't care because they know better then to trash one of their key supporter groups...racists. Them along with right wing christian fanatics are the base of the GOP party. Why would Palin and McCain try and stop them from spreading the message of hate, hell it's like they are doing their job for them.
