1. It's not that
He was pretty sane 10 years ago, with all his flaws.
It is embracing the Republican party and it's pernicious agenda that did it to McCain.
He made a Faustian bargain with the devil and think he already regrets it.
At the end, he will end up losing the presidency and giving up any respect he might have had before.

2. This idea was put forward during the
2000 Republican presidential primaries by the Bushies against McCain. I imagine it had some influence on his loss of the nomination. It's weird that McCain is using the same crew who beat him up during that period to help him get elected now. Some skewed version of the Stockholm syndrome?
