African American debate questioner who got lectured by McCain on Freddie & Fannie responds to McCain
Town hall whiplash

McCain's rough "town hall" debate just got a bit worse, as one questioner writes about the experience on his Facebook page:

How did I feel about Sen. McCain stating “You probably never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this"

Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person. I have a bachelor degree in Political Science from Tennessee State, so I try to keep myself up to date with current affairs. I have a Master degree in Legal Studies from Southern Illinois University, a few years in law school, and I am currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Memphis. In defense of the Senator from Arizona I would say he is an older guy, and may have made an underestimation of my age. Honest mistake.

However, it could be because I am a young African-American male. Whatever the case may be it was somewhat condescending regardless of my age to make an assumption regarding whether I was knowledgeable about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

even though he's the son and grandson of admirals, God is so little impressed by that, that He has allowed a distinguished and highly intelligent meritocrat to compete with him for the Presidency. The pecking-order's all gone haywire!

As Joe Biden's mother says about Gramps, "Gaaaawd love him!" But he's a raging maniac....and a dear, dear friend of all George's base.

66. Freepers on this issue
I suspect the media is committing similar frauds with their “uncommitted voter” polls and focus groups. All designed to move and sway the weak minded.

Why didn’t he ask an intelligent question then?

I take this to mean, he is pursing a government job.

Liberal Arts degrees are never an indication that their holder is an intelligent person. The opposite is most probably true.

You knew it had to be fraudulant - there are no undecided African American voters.

This election needs to be postponed.

Well, this guy is a complete liar and idiot, then. A liar for saying he was undecided and an idiot for supporting the socialist Hussein.

If the guy was a plant that didn't mean the mccain had to answer him in the manner he did? If his question was unintelligent, then why did mccain have a problem answering it? And the last time I checked a M.L.S. was not a degree in liberal arts. JMHO

74. A Masters in legal studies at SIU law school is nothing to sneeze at.
"The Master of Legal Studies (M.L.S.) degree is a post-baccalaureate degree program designed for those who wish to obtain an advanced knowledge of the law and the U.S. legal system, but who do not wish to become lawyers. The program is especially appropriate for those already possessing significant career experience who wish to gain an understanding of the US legal system, in order to enhance their career or change career direction. The admissions policy is very selective.

The SIU School of Law offers the M.L.S. degree in two forms, one a general M.L.S. and the other a highly specialized M.L.S. in Health Law and Policy. Both programs involve the completion of at least 30 semester hours of credit in law (including up to six hours of credit with the SIU Graduate School) courses. The specific curriculum is developed with and approved by the Director of Graduate Legal Studies, and offers considerable flexibility to meet each student’s individual needs."

123. Just another ignorant Freeper, feeling jealous and threatened....
because someone is more intelligent and educated than they are. (Shocker, eh?)

Their need to put this man down, and discredit his intelligence and education, just shows (yet again) that they are insecure and self-loathing, and probably have a 3rd grade education.

Is there no limit to the unfathomable depths of fanaticism and depravity that they'll sink to?

Of course the man's education is nothing to sneeze at. The fools over at FR saw an intelligent African American who can both think and speak circles around them, and the resentment came pouring to the surface.

Sad, and typical for them.

Also funny how the term "Liberal Arts Degree" sent them into a knee-jerk frenzy where they accused anyone holding such a degree of being "not very intelligent" simply because the word "liberal" frightens them. They have no idea what the term "Liberal Arts" even means.

due to the fact that William Alexander McCain, 19th Century plantation owner in Carrol County, Mississippi, owner of 57 slaves was John McCain's great great grandfather? Maybe the acorn has fallen from the tree.

They asked a few questions regarding my choice in the Presidential election. They asked who I would vote for. I said most likely I would be voting for Barack Obama. They followed with, "is there any chance that you would change your mind"? I said "Of course anything is possible." They then asked me as an uncommitted voter would I like to participate in the Town hall debate. I said "Of course!"

... I picked up on McCain's remark as well.

I'm glad the guy was able to comment on it, and that I was able to read his comment...

106. Maybe It Is The Long Campaign
Whatever, but John McCain only seems to know how to insult people. He would be about as capable of reaching across the aisle as Dick Cheney and we know how well that has worked.

Something that is surprising is that the latest Gallup daily tracking poll would have been after the debate and it showed no change from the previous day, 52-41 Obama. These national polls all seem suspect this year. Many of them still have McCain within 4-5 points which is less than the State polls in places like Virginia and Florida are showing. With McCain's bumbling, the economic meltdown and the disarray in our foreign policy one would think that the actual margin would be in landslide territory, say, 15%.

109. The debate that keeps on giving!
First "That one." Then the idiotic misrepresentation of the planetarium projector. Now this.

As I watched the debate, I couldn't believe what a condescending statement McCain made. I hollered at my TV, "I bet this guy knows more about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than you do, douchebag!" I noticed Oliver was smiling after McCain insulted his intelligence, so it was obvious he thought it was f'ed up also.

I am so grateful to Oliver Clark for responding publicly to McCain on this. My mood has just been elevated several notches thanks to this wonderful young American!

Is it too late to take McCain up on his offer of 10 town hall debates?

At no time did I take McCain's comment as racist or belittling the guy's youthful demeanor. I wonder how many people in their 30s, 40s, and even beyond knew much about Freddy and Fannie. I sure as hell didn't and I am in my early 40s.

If there is one thing which drives me bananas, it is the constant vigilance for being insulted. And let me tell you, my friends: if you seek insult, ye will find it...

I am not going to walk around with a subjective filter coloring my interactions in life. And I am sure that they come into play more times than I care to admit. Why do you think Obama has been so successful? Damn, if anyone has a right to scream 'racism!' it would be him but he is too positive to go there. He knows that it solves absolutely NOTHING.

but sticking your head in the sand and pretending is not healthy either. i *correct* people when they do something or say something that offends my personhood, and in doing so, i put the blame on them where it belongs. i am not a passive victim of racism, nor will i participate in denying it by pretending it doesn't exist. i seriously doubt that obama, a self-respecting black man, would allow someone to insult him without addressing it, in some manner.

119. During the primaries, Obama had all kinds of racial crap thrown at him or have you forgotten?
-Ferraro said that had Obama been White, he wouldn't have been in his position as candidate for Prez.

-He had Hillary say that it took President Johnston to sign a bill that MLK pushed (WTF?! Obama's running for president; he's not a minister so that comment was alluding to his race).

-He had some crazy PUMA White lady call him "an inadequate Black man"

-He had Bob Johnston, former head of BET, say he was running the streets 'doing what he was doing' which almost makes it sound like a gangbanger

-He had Andrew Young saying that Bill Clinton probably had more Black women than Obama, who is MARRIED to one!

(The last two cracks, by Black men, are particularly odious.)

Obama could have complained about these, and the many other, racially-tinged comments made about him over the last two years. I am sure in his life he has gotten shit for being biracial. But Obama is so focused and above it all that he lets it roll off his shoulders instead of rolling in that toxic garbage. So no, he doesn't confront stuff like that; he IGNORES it. And that is why he is where he is.

You don't know what is going through people's minds sometimes and you can't accuse people of racism unless you are pretty damn sure about it. That comment by McCain was innocent. I don't think McCain is racist, but I DO think he allows these dangerous audience members too much free reign and should correct them.

120. he can't ignore racism in america
as a campaign tactic he can choose not to address it, but it is still an issue in the campaign, as mcacain and palin well know. that's something no one can ignore because it is on display for the world to see.
i doubt obama would allow a colleague to make a racist joke or call him the n word to his face.

i do think mccain is probably a racist...and palin too. but since they are republicans, it's not exactly a revelation since racism is a republican party value.

now i do think there is a difference between their racism and the racism of some of their supporters, but it's still racism.

the good thing about obama is that our economic crisis is so severe that even those americans who may harbor some racist feelings towards black people are voting for him anyway.

121. You cannot legislate tolerance; you just cannot
You can demand that any racial taunting in the workplace, schools, and other public areas is prohibited. Let's face it--this was not that type of situation. You know and I know it. You are trying to equate a true racial incident with what occurred yesterday and I am telling you, dewd--it's a mistake. Save your battles for the clear-cut cases of true racism. I heard some bonehead yell something against Obama at a McCain rally and I saw him seem to flinch. I don't think he is a racist. He and his wife adopted a very dark-skinned girl from India (or nearby) and took shit about it during the 2000 campaign. Very ugly smear job against him then.

and there are no mistakes, though no doubt some ugly truths. i think mccain, like many republicans, is racist to some extent, regardless of his wife's adoption of a girl from bangladesh. and you are correct: even though he is employing racist tactics now, those very same tactics were used against him and his adopted daughter, bridget in 2000.

who are you to judge what is a "true racial incident" and what isn't? if the man mccain was condescending to didn't think it was racial, then i'd take his word for it because he experienced it.

i sure as hell can demand zero tolerance of racism in my workplace: it's called the law. just ask my supervisor about that. she had an unfortunate "mistake" and used the n word at work. our hr department took appropriate action by giving her an official reprimand.
