Do I have a voter registration problem?
Last week, I got a call from a volunteer from the Obama campaign--who said she
was making sure that I would be voting and that I knew where to go.

She said, "You're in Pinellas Park, right"

I told her that, no, I was in Polk County in Iowa. She said she had me down
as being in Florida! I assumed this was just some random error. We laughed
about it and said our good-byes.

Today, I get another call from an Obama volunteer. Again, I was asked if I
knew where to go in Pinellas Park to vote. I said, "This is the second time
that someone has called thinking that I'm voting in Florida. I'm in Iowa."

The caller was stunned. She has my full name/house number/street/phone as being
registered in Pinellas Park, Florida. She asked me if I'd ever lived in
Florida, and I told her no. I've lived in Iowa most of my life and never
in Florida.

I told her that I was registered to vote in Iowa, and that I checked with
our state voting Web site to make sure. I am definitely registered in Iowa.

She told me that I'm also registered in the state of Florida.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Could this be a clerical error?

I don't want my Iowa vote to be nullified because I'm registered in another state.

It's too late to call Florida tonight, but I will tomorrow. If anyone has any
insight, please let me know.

1. I wonder if the Pukes are registering people in two states so they can scream fraud?
Especially with Florida being mentioned.

2. I am a volunteer with the Obama campaign and
we haven't been making calls like this. We are still calling the "undecided" lists. I would call your town clerk and check it out. This sounds a little odd to me.

7. I wonder if the calls in each state...
...are different.

In some states, you can still register to vote. In others, the registration deadline has passed, so
maybe they're calling Dems only in those states--to get their registered voters out to the polls.

9. Odd is right
saying that she is registered in Florida, but calling her in Iowa.

Thanks madaboutharry for chiming in on this. When this confusing, strange stuff happens it's good to hear straight from someone who knows what they are talking about.

3. It could be clerical - if you have the same name
its very easy to get names and address mixed up - I have a very unusual name but still find there are 20+ people on Facebook with my exact name (just an example).

4. Same name, wrong phone number?
I expect that the contact list was the work of a national agency. Maybe they found a Florida voter with the same name as you, but retrieved your phone number when assembling the list?

Yes, it sounds suspicious, but it could easily be nothing.

5. Well, consider this possibility
There is another person with your name who lives in Pinellas Park, Fla. How did they get your Iowa phone number? Somebody screwed it up in the data base. I would bet if you called your namesake in Fla he'd tell you that he's been getting calls asking him if he knows where to vote in Iowa.

I wouldn't worry about it. These kinds of things happen all the time. Now just be thankful that this other guy didn't rack up a bunch of motor vehicle accidents or tickets that were mixed up in the division of motor vehicle records. Then you'd REALLY be in trouble!

6. Well Vote Early & Vote Often I always say.
Your going to have to vote early in Iowa because it's quite a drive to Florida & you'll have to hurry to get their beforte the polls close,

8. PM me with your name - I can look you up in the Obama database
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 05:00 PM by csziggy
Unless the volunteer who called you has given the info to their data people and had it removed, I can see what info we have.

Edited to add - I called a woman yesterday who was listed as being in Tallahassee. She had lived here for 13 years but moved to PA several years ago. We had both her FL and PA addresses and her PA phone number in the data base. I've now marked her FL address as being bad. I can do the same for the phone number that is yours in another state and get it out of our database.
