Why I love and admire Barack Obama--a 44YO white female.
<a href="" target="_blank"><img src="" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I love Barack because we have many things in common. They may be silly things to all of you but I really feel a connection to him because of these things. First, he is left-handed. So am I. I always receive comments about it in small talk. Second, I have had a funny name. It's Norwegian and it's always stumped people. My dad and I were the only ones listed with this name in the Los Angeles phone directory. My first name is also Gwen. Not too many people by that name. So it's commented on constantly. (However, thank you Gwenyth Paltrow and Gwen Stefani for making it more well known in recent years!).

Third, he is 47 and I am 44. We both grew up in the "Sesame Street" generation. As we watched, we were taught things like "cooperation" and respecting others' culture and traditions. We can't remember when Kennedy was shot but we can remember the feelings resonated so soon after his death.

Fourth, his father left him and his mother when he was 2 years old. So did my father. I don't have many memories of him until I was about 9 years old when he came to visit and occasional calls and presents before that. My mother was also controversial and before her time. She was thinking way beyond her time period. She had a period where she was single and we were also on food stamps and unemployment for a time.

Fifth, we both could've chosen a path that was dark but we chose not to. We both found a very supportive spouse and ventured on into education. He became a lawyer and I became a Registered Nurse. We both desired to help our fellow man on the paths we were led.

Sixth, we both sought out a meaning to our spirituality and attended quite controversial churches but found our faiths there. However, we both became disenfranchised yet still faithful when organized religion and its leaders let us down.

This is why I love and admire Barack Obama. I know deep in my heart he is a lot like me. He has led almost the same life as I have. He has tried to live an upright and decent life because he wants to make the world a better place for his children and future generations. I cannot for the life of me figure out why human beings can be so cruel and will not work together. I'm sure he is as sad as I am sometimes at the hate and cruelty of this world. But I also know he has the vision and hope that I have for a better world.

Sorry to be so corny but I truly have found a soulmate and an admiration for this potential leader. Please don't let him pass by. Try your hardest to get him elected. I believe I know his heart by his actions, mannerisms, and his words. I believe he is the one who can lead us through this fiery furnace of economic collapse. he has the calmness and serenity to help us all through.

God Bless Barack Obama.

3. Not to flame you or anything
But why on earth does your race compared to his matter to the point where you feel the need to point it out like that?

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I swear, I really am just curious. Because I've seen people doing this for months now ("why this white guy loves Barack" etc), and I know you guys mean well, but it really, honestly comes across as "Wow, Barack is totally my black friend!!! Isn't that awesome?!"

And it's really sort of offensive and Black People Loves Us-ish. Again, no disrespect intended.

5. I didn't say anything about race???
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 02:14 AM by Indiana_Dem
I mentioned the reasons why I felt a connectedness to him? I guess I might have mentioned the things different about me that people have singled me out for like my name, my left-handedness, my single mother, being on food stamps & being without--we have those things in common. Is that a bad thing? I like to connect to people I have things in common with? We happen to have many things in common that I haven't found in others around me.

Ok. I was inspired to write something positive as opposed to what I've been reading here all night.

on edit: I wrote 44YO white female in the heading because I don't fit the demographic of those the polls say support Obama. I wasn't meaning it as a racial thing. I didn't intend for it to be anyway. I was thinking of the polls.

11. That's what I assume: description for demographics purposes.

During the primaries, I always described myself as a "36-year-old white female for Obama" because supposedly, according to my demographic, I should have been a Hillary supporter instead.

Only lefthanders know how much we look for fellow southpaws. Unfortunately, McCain is also left-handed.

9. I'm willing to trust him
The things he has said. The calm, yet forceful manner that he has when confronting an issue. His positive message, and willingness to go all quid pro quo on their asses when they start their lies and negative tactics. He is my age. We are the tail end of the baby boomers who really are the beginnings of the genXers who started their road to activism with a sense of community. We organized neighborhoods in the 80's and 90's to fight injustice and to embrace hope. Now we are seeing the fruits of our labor.

After we have a majority, I really hope that the Democrats will be the party of progress and refuse to bullied by the right wingers again like they were under rethuglican rule. I hope they can take on the mantle of government by and for the people rather than to corporate interests and their own power and greed.
