Gov. Richardson: ‘Permanent fissure’ with Bill Clinton
Politico reports:

Bill Richardson — famously called a ‘Judas’ by a Clinton loyalist for backing Barack Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton
in the contentious Democratic presidential primary — says he’s not concerned that Bill Clinton continues to hold a grudge
against him.

“It could be pretty much a permanent fissure. But that’s politics, that’s OK,” Richardson told National Public Radio’s Renee
Montagne in an interview that aired Thursday morning on "Morning Edition." “I did what I thought was best for the country...
But with him — he wants to keep a grudge, that’s fine with me. I move on. I’m governor of New Mexico. I’m happy where I
am.”

Richardson... dropped out of the race after poor showings in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary... After he
picked Obama over Clinton, Clinton backer James Carville called it “an act of betrayal” and compared the move to the
biblical betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot. Bill Clinton, who had personally pleaded for Richardson to endorse his wife,
was said to be especially incensed. Richardson told Montagne he’s spoken to Hillary Clinton and that a fundraiser he
held two months ago raised nearly $250,000 to help her retire the debt she accrued during her presidential campaign.

“She appreciated it. You know, we talked,” Richardson said. “Have I heard from President Clinton? No.”

What a shame. For all his troubles (not to mention his stellar resumé), I hope Gov. Richardson is the top contender to
be Secretary of State under an Obama administration.

1. Quite frankly, Obama can do more for Richardson than Clinton at this point.

2. I've said it plenty of times and I'll say it again
Bill Richardson thought it was a good idea to move water from the Great Lakes down to New Mexico (he claimed that Wisconsin, e.g., was "awash in water"). Not only does this indicate a gigantic lack of knowlege of the Great Lakes ecosystem, I also find that it indicates a reckless disregard for the environment.

I hope there is NO place for him in an Obama administration.

5. Apples and oranges.
He may not know enough to head up the Department of the Interior, but he sure as heck knows enough to be SoS.

Your thinking is another example of the perfect being the enemy of the good and I assure you, Obama knows the difference.

3. Bill Clinton patched it up with Al Gore..
I imagine he and Bill Richardson will eventually patch things up as well.

4. But Al Gore wasn't stupid
and he would never try to divert water from the Great Lakes to water golf courses in New Mexico.

Sorry, every time I see the name Bill Richardson I get mad all over again.

7. Too late. The Great Lakes Compact was recently re-ratified.
So, New Mexico will have to find their water elsewhere - the Great Lakes are once again protected.

9. How about New Mexico will just have to stop using so much water?
It's destructive to ecosystems to "find it elsewhere".

This isn't about perfect vs. good. This is about permanent damage to the environment. It's not one small thing, it's huge.

The Great Lakes will be protected for a while, till the next opportunist tries to go after them.

12. Works for me, but then I'm in Michigan. Frankly, it's nice to see the Lakes
rising again after all the rain we've gotten this year. But the Great Lakes Compact WILL protect the waters for some time to come, and I think the people of these states would protect them, as well. I'm not worried about that. Now, if we could just get the people in dry states to give up their lawns, we'd be getting somewhere.

16. Their lawns? How about their golf, their pools, and their air conditioning?
I'm from Michigan too and Bill Richardson got me so upset during the primaries I'm STILL not over it!!!!!

He is very gung ho about attracting people to New Mexico and about their tourist (read: golf) industry. But it's ecologically unsustainable.

That's why I get so upset when I even hear his name.

18. New Mexico is NOT Arizona.
We are very careful with our water and don't have golf courses everywhere. We look somewhat scraggly as a result. ;-) We get tax breaks for using low-water toilets. People use drip systems instead of sprinkler systems.

If you were anywhere near Phoenix, I can certainly understand your concern, but please don't confuse cities like Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM with a city like Phoenix, AZ.

19. OK, fine, then how do you explain Bill Richardson's remarks?
and this:

http://www.golfnewmexico.com/

I understand that the good people of DU are probably at the forefront of conservation, but the fact is that the Southwest is trying to attract huge numbers of year-round residents, and that part of the appeal is the upscale retirement communities. We in the north really don't feel like sending you our water just because there are people (and not just retirees) who don't want to live through winters.

20. Thanks for your insightful, on-the-ground post
I have been to Arizona several times and through New Mexico just once, and your description of your home state is spot on.

There is no comparison to driving through Phoenix and the waste you see, and driving through Albuquerque or Santa Fe with their naturalistic, desert look.

Loved your state by the way and hope to go back one day for a full tour.

10. Anyway let's not take this to heart the Clintons have presently helped Obama a lot and we can't>
fault them for that. It would be best for them to let the past go for them to move forward, forgiveness is the answer in every area of life.

14. Honestly, Bill (Clinton) will probably always have a complex relationship with Obama
You have to have a huge ego to be president. While I'm sure that Bill *will* vote for Obama in the polling booth, and although he'll be publicly supportive at many times, he may often be a thorn in an Obama Administration's side. Bill will probably feel that Obama's achievements overshadow his own or that if an Obama WH screws up that Bill's would have been better, etc.

This is nothing new -- this is very, very common with presidents and ex-presidents of the same party. Carter and Clinton have always had a weird relationship. Truman did not like Kennedy. The old guy always feels the new guy isn't showing enough deference or isn't doing things the way they should be.

24. I've got an attiitude about Richardson shutting down the NM recount in '04
He's a practical pol, but needs to remember to focus on the rights of the voters more, and of party calculus less.

This rift with WJC is a perfect example of how calculating and self-centered he is - from a practical standpoint, he needs Hillary and Obama so he makes nice to them, and doesn't need President Clinton and so blows him off.

Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 02:39 PM by ClarkUSA
The person who's calculating and self-serving here is Bill Clinton. As for the NM recount, what's that got to do with his
capability as SoS? Again, this is another loopy example of the perfect is the enemy of the good.
