Geez. They spread the hate to their children too.
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 05:37 PM by TwoSparkles
Barack Obama is pretty well known in our household. They know I volunteer and was
a precinct captain. We've had numerous political discussions and my children were upset because they
couldn't watch the last debate (it was on a school night and past their bed time).

It's possible that my second grade girl brought up politics first. She's not
shy about her support of Obama. However, I don't think she would have provoked
the kind of conversation that occurred.

She came home today, and said, "Mom, is it true that Barack Obama wants to kill babies
after they are born and that he wants to turn the country into an ice-cream social?"

I sat down at the table, and I tried to act like I wasn't shocked. She was coloring, so
I grabbed some colors and paper, "No...that's not true. Barack Obama has two children
of his own and he loves babies." I reminded her of the "Love is All Around" video
of Barack holding all of those precious babies.

"Ok," she said, "yeah, but that's not what Jared said."

I told her that Jared must have misunderstood and was making things up, and I reminded her
of the time that her classmates made up a story about a dinosaur living in the woods
in our town.

Then she said, "But why does he want to turn the country into an ice-cream social?"

I had no idea what she was saying, and I said, "What do you mean, did Jared say
this too?"

My daughter said, "Yes, he said we'll all have to live in ice cream 'socializing'."

Then, I got it!

"Socialism? Ice-Cream socialism?" I said.

"Yes," she said "Ice cream socialism. What does that mean, mommy?"

I told her that meant that Barack Obama wants to give everyone free ice-cream when he becomes president.

She thought that was pretty cool. :)

Geez, guys--I have this sick feeling in my stomach. I actually have a headache. What kind of a parent
says those things about killing babies, to their eight-year old children? How horrifying to a child, to
believe that a would-be President wants to kill babies, without fully understanding the complex issue
of reproductive rights and abortion? Even though children can't fully understand the issue, these
parents are content instilling "baby killer fears" in the hearts and minds of their own eight-year-old
children?

How is this different from radical Muslims who indoctrinate hate in their young children?

In my own at least--I guess the hate isn't limited to campaign rallies. They bring it home
and infiltrate their innocent children with it. :(

1. My kids have been told that if Obama gets elected...
it's all "our" fault, because he's a terrorist.

The kids in my daughters' school must have to listen to Hannity and Limbaugh with their parents. It's truly vile, the stuff they hear.

2. My 8 year old has heard similar talk from a classmate
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 05:39 PM by HereKittyKitty
She says that Obama will raise our taxes and make us all poor and that he's not a Christian. Her mother is a helper at the school and concurred with her. They are otherwise very nice people. I'm going to let myself assume that they are just gullible.

3. Back in July, my 15 y/o step daughter told me
her mom and stepdad wouldnt vote for the "Muslim N-" (yeah...she said it...they live in redneck-ville USA, complete w/the rebel flag flying...)

I asked her if she liked sounding ignorant and she looked at me like I had two heads.

So I said, "When you talk about things that you haven't confirmed for yourself...you not only sound ignorant, but you look really stupid doing it."

4. You are a good mom!
I especially like the part about "school night" and "past their bedtime." ;-)

Poor Jared.

5. This is why the wingnuts are pushing "home schooling"
They want to indoctrinate their kids with their bigotry and their beliefs. The wingnuts don't want children, they want little robots who spout their parents beliefs. Individual thought is not allowed!

9. sigh........ we homeschool in our family.
You know many of us who homeschool do it precisely because we want to raise our children to be independent thinkers... not inclined to follow the crowd and be bound up by peer pressure like so many in the public school system. Just something for you to think about:)

11. We home school.
My kids aren't robots. We encourage critical thinking and discussion at our house. And for what it is worth, most little kids 'spout' their parent's beliefs, liberal or conservative. Perhaps you should think a little bit about your own bigotry toward home schooling families.

19. Another home schooling family here

My wife is an accredited teacher, who still teaches part time, as well as has an administrative and teaching position at a Montessori Teachers College.

We have our own reasons for home schooling, and they have nothing to do with your bigoted broad brush attack.

Shame on you.

6. Precious.
It sounds like you're raising amazing children. The little Nazi Jared could have heard his parents talking in the other room, or he could have even been watching Faux Noise.

I take heart when I think about the way you are raising your children, and the way I'm raising mine. I believe the time of hate is slowly coming to an end.

7. Your poor baby girl!
Hugs to her! My daughter is a huge Obama fan, and she would probably get into a fist fight with anyone who talked smack about him...lol

that said, I have seen the footage of these "hate rallies" and there ARE kids there.
I have seen pics and stupid tv shows where proud KKK'ers have their kids in full regalia and their kids are spewing the hate just as vehemently, even if they don't know what they are saying. How many 6 yr olds know what a lynching is? I shudder at the thought!
It is so sad that these kids only know small mindedness and fear and anger and scapegoating...

I grew up in Oakland CA and had friends throughout elementary school that were several different races. I miss that diversity now, living in a primarily white mountain town...but at least most of the folks up here are quite liberal.
And I encourage my kids to see people as PEOPLE, not as races. All we can do is practice tolerance and acceptance...kids learn by example.

Let's just continue to educate our own, AND whoever asks... a little enlightenment goes a long way.
The only antiodote to hate is understanding and education. That's our arsenal, and it is mighty powerful.

8. Little pitchers have big ears.
When my daughter left for college I toasted her by saying, " Remember what we taught you, not what you learned from us."

Her mom and I had divorced about 16 years earlier.

It's not just what they are told but what they observe.

10. What a nice euphemism:
"Remember what we taught you, not what you learned from us."
***We call that, "Do as I say, not as I do." :-)

13. My 5 year old is a huge Obama supporter.
He believes that if Obama is elected, we will all have more money and he will get a Wii. So he is very outspoken in his support of Obama and will shout down anyone who disagrees with him. I have discussed the need to more diplomatic in his support, but since he has convinced himself that Wii ownership is at stake, I feel that I am making little progress.

I don't know what to say about the baby killing comment. The kid must have heard an adult say it, I doubt he came up with it on his own. On the other hand, my own son has been known to say heinous things, mostly because he enjoys getting a rise out of people. The boy may have overheard something, or mis-overheard it once, and enjoys repeating it because it gets people riled up.

20. I think he will be disappointed.
5 is too young for a Wii, if you ask me, plus they are really expensive and Obama or no Obama, it will probably be beyond our means.

He has an alternate theory about Santa's elves building the Wii for him at the North Pole in case Obama doesn't come through for him, but instead of saying Santa's elves, he said the slaves at the North Pole, which really had me confused for a bit.... This kid is a scream if you can keep up with him.

15. Good for you!
I remember when some of my child's classmates (not mine) where going to view, at a slumber party, an R-rated movie in the second grade! Boy, was that a wake up call as to some current parental views!

As far as politics goes... your child is hearing it, but you are hearing it as well. You are providing a teaching moment for your daughter... good on you! It is is a good opportunity for you to set the record straight, even though the record maybe somewhat scary.

What a-hole parents scare their own children, as well as other children?

16. I have to say
I have very leftist parents. It's why I am the way I am - I'm convinced of this.

But as a little kid - I can distinctly remember my dad SCREAMING at the top of his lungs at Reagan. Hated the guy. Like - seriously seriously hated him. Some of the things he said - I know I repeated. I think my dad is the guy who made up the joke about the Reagan computer: No periods, no commas, no memory.

Once, when asked what I believed? By a teacher since we did a 'mock election' in 1984? I said:

My family believes in the ACLU, the League of Women Voters and the SPLC. My parents? I did them proud.

Anyhoo - don't take it too much to heart. I think you put a good 'spin' on it for your daughter. And I'm so thrilled you are raising a little liberal! :pals:

First thing he did was bring up Obama wanting to "kill babies" :eyes:
