McCain tussles with Palin over whipping up a mob mentality.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4926283.ece

With his electoral prospects fading by the day, Senator John McCain has fallen out with his vice-presidential running mate about the direction of his White House campaign.

McCain has become alarmed about the fury unleashed by Sarah Palin, the moose-hunting “pitbull in lipstick”, against Senator Barack Obama. Cries of “terrorist” and “kill him” have accompanied the tirades by the governor of Alaska against the Democratic nominee at Republican rallies.

Mark Salter, McCain’s long-serving chief of staff, is understood to have told campaign insiders that he would prefer his boss, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, to suffer an “honourable defeat” rather than conduct a campaign that would be out of character – and likely to lose him the election.

Snip

A leading Republican consultant said: “A lot of conservatives are grumbling about what a poor job McCain is doing. They are rolling their eyes and saying, ‘Yes, a miracle could happen, but at this rate it is all over’.

More at the link. Pretty interesting. On the one hand, it's trying to paint McCain in a positive light and Palin in a negative one, while at the same time saying she's eyeing 2012 (good luck, honey, LOL). I thought it was also interesting how almost everyone has pretty much given up on the idea of McCain winning.

Yay!

31. the question is
if it comes to it, what do the SS do?

Ive long been curious about this, actualy, as a technicality. Say Bush pulled ol' Saddam's Golden gun on Cheney for offering him a soft pretzel. What do the SS do?

23. Instant epic loose.
He can't send her home. He is stuck with her.
The presidential race affects other races and even if they conceded the presidential race the republicans would not want to put senate and house seats in more danger.
McCain is stuck with his choice.
Please let us GTVO and let history show it was one of the worst decisions ever made.

5. The natural habitat of a conservative voter is in a lynch mob.
Conservatives have suffered tremendously from habitat destruction ever since the voting rights act of 1965. No wonder they are always so angry.

11. My long-term predictions involve two terms for Obama
and two terms for Biden, creating a record-breaking Democratic streak of 16 years of economic stability, then prosperity, and constantly fighting off the Republican chihuahuas nipping at their ankles.

10. Whoops, There It Is... 2012 !!!
<snip>

Palin, 44, has led the character attacks on Obama in the belief that McCain may be throwing away the election and her chance of becoming vice-president. Her supporters think that if the Republican ticket loses on November 4, she should run for president in 2012.

A leading Republican consultant said: “A lot of conservatives are grumbling about what a poor job McCain is doing. They are rolling their eyes and saying, ‘Yes, a miracle could happen, but at this rate it is all over’.

“Sarah Palin is no fool. She sees the same thing and wants to salvage what she can. She is positioning herself for the future. Her best days could be in front of her. She wants to look as though she was the fighter, the person with the spunk who was out there taking it to the Democrats.”

12. Moose Lips is not running the show...
I don't believe for a minute that she is responsible for her script nor her day-to-day campaign schedule. No doubt she is doing damage to the campaign, but I think she's a puppet taking orders from Steve Schmidt.

He's directed her script. It blew up in their faces, and now Schmidt is trying cover his ass by making McCain the good cop.

It ain't going to work.

They are screwed.

18. The problem that he hasn't been running his own campaign, and now he wants to take it back.
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 08:12 PM by mycritters2
Too late.

He wanted Loserman for a running mate, but gave in to the far right wing of the party. He's been giving in to them too much, and has finally realized it's all out of control. The problem, though, is that he can't put the genie back in the bottle.

At one level, I actually feel sorry for him. I think he got taken in by campaign consultants. They didn't understand him, and he didn't understand them. Now it's all unraveling. All because he didn't put together a team that thought like him. His ambition got in the way of his good sense (and, yes, I think he has some).

But for all of my sympathy, the fact is that all of this means he's completely unqualified to be president. If he can't control the employees on his campaign staff, how could he control the differing, strong personalities of a Cabinet and White House staff. Let alone dealing with Congress.

Yeah, I do feel sorry for him to some degree. But all of this just confirms my support of Obama.

29. Why didn't McCain get Ed Rollins? Would've made more sense to him, politically.
Oh, I forgot, he owes the Bush family in some shadowy, blackmail-y manner we'll never know.

Not unlike when they forced Perot out of the race by blackmailing his daughter.

33. I absolutely agree...
I don't think he is an evil man. There was a time I actually had some respect for him. It would be a wonderful thing for him to regain some of his integrity and have an "honorable loss" as was mentioned in the article. He must lose... and Obama must win, but I have no desire to see the man utterly humiliated and devoid of any shred of self respect or dignity. At this point he is the only one who can make that happen.

Now Palin, on the other hand... that one is evil.

34. I agree with your assessment
And I do feel a bit sorry for him too. He wanted this badly and listened to advisors whose rancor took this campaign to a very dark and hate filled place. Not only will he lose the election, he will lose what bit of dignity he may have had. That will be hard to bear.

Even if were to believe McCain's "oh my, what has she done to my campaign" bullshit, WHY did HE not step forward after the FIRST report of the hostility/threats from Palin's crowd instead of letting it go on and on, event after event??

And here I thought the finger pointing would *start* on the morning of Nov 5th.

from the article:

A McCain official confirmed that there was dissension in the campaign. “There is always going to be a debate about the costs and benefits of any strategy,” he said.

“After November 4, the feelings of individuals will come to light. It is only natural and will be expected.”

On edit re: her wanting McCain to bring up Wright: be careful what you wish for, Sarah..your's/Todd's AIP leader comments about the US seems to have made Wright look like Uncle Sam himself. Do you really want to go there??

36. Can't wait for a Vanity Fair article on the demise of McCain/Palin
The finger pointing and Sunday punch/B*slapping will be a sight to behold.

The other night when McCain was trying to regain some "dignity" I asked my husband if he saw even a hint of remorse in McCain's face. His answer, "Not an ounce." He has no soul. I'm now convinced more than ever, he never has, especially after reading the article in Rolling Stone.
