My prediction for next week's debate: McCain tries to distance himself from his own supporters
I fully expect that at the next debate, McCain will turn to the camera and speak directly to the audience, saying that the things some of his supporters have been saying about Obama are untrue and he condemns them. He won't really take responsibility (although he'll try to, while suggesting both sides have allowed the campaign to go off in a direction that isn't helpful).

It almost makes me wonder whether it was the plan all along -- fire up the base with hot rhetoric, and appeal to the middle by trying to appear to be "concerned" about the campaign rhetoric.

4. I have to agree with your prediction
... I also agree he won't be successful.

Though never a fan of McCain's ... I don't believe that this level of hate mongering is his style. Must be terrible to sell one's soul...

5. Extremists, yes. Palin, no.
I don't think McCain could overtly distance himself from his own V.P. pick. That would only amplify his poor judgement of picking her in the first place.

On the other hand, he could very well bad-cop the noisy, angry Christofascist mob that has been the staple at Palin's rallies.

What does he have to lose with his negatives now rising as his positives flat-line?

McCain has managed to alienate the moderate/undecided voter - the ones who used to like him; and he has embraced those he labeled as the "agents of intolerance" in 2000.

Can anyone say irony? McCain made the choice to play with fire. And he is now getting burnt. He has no one to blame but himself.

6. He's going to be "concerned?"
I'd love to have McCain as a "buddy!" :bounce:

7. Still won't smell good to independents who have seen how horribly racist
his supporters are and don't want to associate with them.
