Repukes falling back on the divided gov't argument as a reason to vote for McCain
more and more, desperate repukers are pleading for Americans to vote for McCain because divided gov't is balanced gov't.

Just pathetic.

5. It is pathetic
They can't come up with any positive reasons that can gain any traction, so their best hope is that they can get people to vote for him just based on him not being a Democrat. That's not exactly a winning endorsement of their candidate.

6. Respect this argument. The response? The supreme court already leans right, and GOP has agenda
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:35 AM by Essene
1. The GOP wants to push their agenda to undo rulings that they dislike.

They hide behind rhetoric of "shrinking government" and "strict interpretation," but it's the GOP who have increased government the most and push their own agenda to undo rulings based on ideology or religion.

2. The GOP had their turn.

7. That won't work now that people have seen how an out of control President can control pretty much
everything.

George Bush has tilted so much power towards the Presidency that Congress sometimes seems irrelevant.

Besides, I don't think that arguing for what most people will/should probably see as more "gridlock" and obstructionism is going to really sell this year. This argument would be a lot more palatable if somebody could show some kind of positive achievements or actual examples of "curbing excesses" that have come about as a result of divided government but all I can remember is Clinton and the Democrats having to "compromise" on a lot of regressive legislation pushed by the Republicans during the last 6 years of his presidency and the Democrats haven't really been able to get much of anything enacted during the past 1-2 years due to Bush/GOP's naked obstructionism and indifference to public opinion.

If this election is, as I suspect, about "change", then I don't think it's going to be an effective argument. Besides, most people support the Democrats on most issues so why would they want to purposely put a roadblock in the way of getting things done that REALLY need to get done? McCain/Palin don't support any major Democratic initiatives AFAIK and sure don't act like they're willing to "reach across the aisle" to work with the Democrats. Besides, how is Congress going to curb another administration that has so much power (and "flexibility") they can basically ignore them like Bush/Cheney has? Remember, Cheney's "so?" Remember Palin's (who's already been found to have abused her power as Governor) stated desire for the VP to have a bigger role (?) in Congress?

12. Yes. A change election isn't about wanting "gridlock".
That doesn't make sense at all.

9. A Divided Government in a time of crisis would spell doom.
We need a govenrment that is capable of acting swiftly to stem the tide of this economic crisis.

The counter argument is a no-brainer.

10. Dumb. Won't work. We need quick action now to solve this crisis.
No time for partisan fighting and most trust the Democrats now more anyway.
