McCain immediately countered the idiot woman of the week's Arab worries with... No, no, no...he's a decent man.
As if being Arab is indecent

WTF? The mature and Presidential thing to do is call this lady out on her racism.
America is not a white only country, despite what ignorant, secessionist fools think.

6. So there are no decent Muslims?
The right response would have been to point out that Obama is a native-born African American with a white mother and a black African father, and that he's a proud American patriot, a devout Christian and a hardworking husband and father who rose from humble origins on his own initiative and talent and may now well become president--the American dream in action. If you don't like his positions on the issues, fine. If you don't like him because he looks different than you, then you're a racist and you should get the fuck out of my rally because we don't need the support of racists to win this election.

10. Of course that's not what I meant. Many Americans are ignorant. They believe that all Arabs
are Muslims. Nothing wrong with Muslims. Let them know that (1) Obama isn't Arab; (2) Not all Arabs are Muslims and there are many who are Christians; and (3) even if Obama were a Muslim, there's nothing wrong with that.

4. I know. There are millions of Arab Americans in this country...
who also have the name 'Hussein'. And there are many Americans who are Muslim, from all ethnic backgrounds. I can't imagine how they are feeling watching this vile display. And who gives a shit what religion Obama is? I sure as hell don't. I think the people at the McCain/Palin rally's are beyond pathetic. They are full of fear and so ignorant it boggles the mind, especially when there is so much accurate information to be found at your fingertips if you just bother to educate yourself. :eyes:

11. They're getting this shit directly from Rush Limpballs who has been pushing the
"Obama is an Arab, not an African American". They are such fucking zombies. "Arab" is another codeword that they use to excuse themselves from being complete racist jerks!!

7. I have a different take on this
He couldn't say what Barack really is: Black.

That doddering old fool is so angry about getting his ass handed to him by a Black Man that he can't even say the word!

:wtf:

8. You don't like Danny Thomas?
He was Lebanese, and a Christian. Kacey Kacem, the DJ, is another Arab American that many folks know about. And Alexander Siddig, the actor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is an Arab (from Sudan). The woman displayed a profound ignorance about Arabs and who and what they are.

9. There are a lot of Muslims and Arabs in this country who will be voting.
The largest population of Arabs is in Dearborn, Michigan. So I guess McCain lost any chance of winning back that state.

She got the information in a pamphlet at the local McCain Headquarters where
She works as a volunteer. If you look at the tape, her reaction was in disbelief.

Talking Points Memo has more on that story: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/10/does-mccain-think-arabs-are-no.php

McCain is a racist as I've said before and his history proves it.

13. Maybe she should be asked..
what an "Arab" is..or what a "Muslim" is. I don't think she knows..or cares. But we knew that. Anyone who isn't lily white is the enemy.

14. Better response to the factually challenged...
If someone makes the assertion that Barack Obama is Arab or Muslim, I would NOT answer "what's wrong with being Arab or Muslim?" Let that come later as a separate topic.

To them that answer sounds like a *confirmation* of their claim, followed by your defense of Arab and Muslims in order to defend Obama.

The approach I would use is to get right in their face and say "no, you are wrong. You are either misinformed or are being willfully dishonest. Obama is Christian. But now that you raised a subject about something that does not pertain to Obama, what do you have against ______ and _____?". And proceed from there.

If there is no way of convincing the person to check the facts, and if you want to be particularly blunt, try this. If you know something about the person you are arguing with, draw an unfair stereotype out of thin air and apply it to them (i.e. their religion, height, appearance, eye color) or something that they may be personally sensitive about. This will not make you any friends, but if you are like me, anyone who is spreading this type of information is off the friend list anyway.

I have used this effectively on a couple occasions with the factually incorrigible. I left them distracted off their original talking points, maybe a little worried about being seen as some time of minority with negative stereotype by their peers, and usually quite pissed off. Not a positive approach, but these people are often beyond hope.
