Bill Kristol: McCain's campaign "not horribly mean-spirited or racist, but it's become pathetic"
Bill Kristol: McCain running 'stupid campaign'
David Edwards and Andrew McLemore

A conservative columnist called McCain's campaign "stupid" for continuing to run attack ads that criticize the character of Democratic opponent Barack Obama when "they haven't worked."

The ads attempt to tarnish Obama's reputation by tying him to 1960s radical William Ayers. Bill Kristol, a columnist for The Weekly Standard, said he agrees that Obama's past connections should be scrutinized, but
the attacks "haven't worked."

With Obama polling better than ever, Kristol told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that McCain needs a new strategy.

"It's not a horribly mean-spirited or racist or disgraceful campaign, but it's really become a pathetic campaign," said

Kristol said one of the McCain campaign's major problems is that it is "out of sync" with its presidential candidate, who has avoided ridiculing Obama.

"If he's not willing to , adjust the campaign," Kristol said. "Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for what we've seen, which is Senator Obama quite correctly saying What's going on here, he won't say this to me and his campaign is saying it in ads."

McCain faced a booing crowd Friday for rebuking a man who said he would be "scared... to bring a child up" if Obama was elected president.

Kristol asked Wallace why Rick Davis was on the news shows Sunday morning instead of McCain or his running mate Gov. Sarah Palin.

"McCain is an attractive, impressive character, Palin is an attractive, impressive character. Why isn't Sarah Palin on this morning instead of Rick Davis? It is ridiculous," Kristol said.

2. Joseph Goebbels Kristol wouldn't recognize "horribly mean-spirited or racist" if it were
giving him a lap dance.

3. Actually, we owe Kristol a lot. Without him, Palin would
still be in Alaska.

He's the one who pretty much forced her candidacy on McCain, winning out over Rove, who wanted Romney. This would have been a much more boring--and a much closer--election if Rove had had his way.

7. Do you know what power Kristol has over McCain that McCain would forego his own choice and that
of Rove?

5. So it means the opposite... McCain's campaign is mean spirited and not
pathetic..... Remember its always the opposite.

He thought Palin was a great pick for McCain and helped craft it.
Which meant she was a bad pick.

He's always wrong.

10. Kristol is such a Palin stalker.
Does he really think that Davis makes a better case for the ticket than Sarah Palin? It really makes zero difference on Fox anyway, but I agree, I'm all for Palin speaking on any media outlet as a campaign spokesperon and being subject to questions from journalists... :)

13. I heard an Ayers ad bright and early this morning here in Philly
on the #1 rated Arbitron station, in the 4th largest media market.

Outside of the possible excuse that McPalin had already paid for it and didn't have time to pull it, seems they didn't get Kristol's memo!

14. Does he ever get tired of being wrong? His magazine is such a complete POS
rag and he's ALWAYS proven wrong. The most off-base part? Characterizing McCain and Palin as "attractive, impressive characters". What planet
is he on? :wtf:

They are both incoherent and irrelevant.

18. "maybe they would have lost anyway.."
At the end of the video. :) Makes me smile more than anything else. I love how Kristol says what people should do, then when it doesn't work talks about how they did it wrong.
