Obama Field Organization Revs Up for Final Month
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 01:50 PM by chicagoexpat
I've been involved in politics a long time, but never thought I'd see an old fashioned organizing campaign like Barack Obama's for President. While many seem enamored by Obama's fine tuning of using the Internet and computer software like Votebuilder for his campaign, it's old fashioned field organizing that's the heart of his success.

Recent articles on Obama's field organization are linked here.

The Washington Post, "Obama Camp Relying Heavily on Ground Effort":

"They've invested in a civic infrastructure on a scale that has never happened," said Marshall Ganz, a labor organizer who worked with César Chávez's farmworker movement and has led training sessions for Obama staff members and volunteers. "It's been an investment in the development of thousands of young people equipped with the skills and leadership ability to mobilize people and in the development of leadership at the local level. It's profound."

The New York Times, "Obama Battles Block by Block to Get Voters to Polls":

ZackExley at Firedoglake in "The New Organizers, Part 1: Obama’s neighborhood teams and the power of inclusion and respect":

"Win or lose, "The New Organizers" have already transformed thousands of communities—and revolutionized the way organizing itself will be understood and practiced for at least the next generation.

"Obama must continue to feed and lead the organization they have built—either as president or in opposition. If he doesn't, then the broader progressive movement needs to figure out how to pick this up, keep it going and spread it to all 50 states.

For any of that to happen, the incredible organizing that has taken place this year inside Obama's campaign—and also here and there in Clinton's—needs to be thoroughly understood and celebrated. Toward that end, here are glimpses from several days of observations and interviews in Central and Southwest Ohio."

Time magazine: "In Battleground Virginia, a Tale of Two Ground Games"

etc., more, etc.

6. Kicking and the ground troops are amazing...
Just went to our GOTV event for Obama and the local field organizers were amazed at the turn out. Those who were around during the Kerry/Edwards campaign had never seen anything like it. We had to bring in more and more chairs. I sat next to two woman who had never been involved with anything like GOTV before. One had never bothered to registered to vote before.

But the most amazing thing is the Obama website makes it so that every single person with a computer can become a ground troop for Obama. They give you local people to call and local people to canvass. You get to target your democratic neighbors. You don't have to be a PCO or anything.

Washington will be Blue, but we have a tough Gov. Race, which we are canvassing with Obama.

Again..if you haven't signed up...do...it's amazingly easy...everything is done for you. All you need to do is make the call and do your part.

7. With his roots as a community organizer
it's no surprise.

When I first went to volunteer, the office manager was describing some of the tools and the processes. I was quite impressed.
