McCain needs to end this nonsense
I really wish he could simply say - look, I disagree with Obama on every issue under the sun, however, he is an honorable man and I believe that the focus of the election should be our policy differences and readiness to lead this country.

If he is the decent man that he professes to be (and that Obama himself has said he is) then he needs to apologize for whatever role he has had in playing into these ridiculous fears and innuendos and vow to spend the final weeks focusing on their contrasting visions for the future of this country.

Obama has consistently gone out of his way in virtually every stump speech to praise McCain's heroism and service to this country. I think McCain ought to return the favor.

I'd like to believe there are some decent folks on the other side of the aisle with whom we could disagree respectfully. Unfortunately, it is continuing to look less like a contest of ideas and more like the sort of thing Hannity and Limbaugh have been pushing for.

I hope that John McCain remembers that those two men (and their cohorts) were no friends or supporters of his, and, in fact, criticized him quite savagely. I hope that he can do the right thing here and we can take one small step away from the frightening level of polarization that continues to rise.

1. McCain has said things like that, but he keeps running TV ads which...
...say that Obama has "worked" with a "terrorist."

3. If you believe the Times story...
His campaign advisers see how things are heading and want him to at least lose with honor, but its the more bloodthirty GOPers that are anxious to fight dirty.

6. Who are those bloodthirsty GOPers?
Who is calling the shots in this campaign?

It seems like they are taking their cues from the crazy RW talk-show hosts.

I think there is a lot of conflict in the campaign.

9. Hannity was talking up Palin before anyone had heard of her
He has also been going on and on about Bill Ayers for months.

It's sad how McCain has finally come around to the Hannity approach, in spite of the fact that Hannity doesn't even really like him very much!

13. But are there enough of them to win an election?
Even Bush had to try to present himself as a "compassionate conservative" way back in the olden days.

15. No where close to enough. If a national candidate is trying to appeal to the base three weeks out,
he is in deep trouble. Run toward the base in the primary and run to the center in the general is an old rule of politics. It became an old rule because it is true.

I don't think it would win him the election (thankfully) but I don't think this nasty approach will win him the election either.

Heck, I wondered if it occured to Mccain that the same people carrying stuffed monkeys and calling Obama an Arab, would probably say the exact same thing about his beloved daughter?

19. I haven't gotten the impression that he's real concerned about his honor this
time around. I know he tried to backpedal with his nutty crowd the other night, but then he called out Lewis when he
criticized the tone of the campaign. I think he has no idea what he's doing anymore.

14. "If he is the decent man that he professes to be" .. He's not.
He never would have gone down this route if he was.

Even if he somehow didn't realize the possible consequences, he'd drop it immediately if he were a decent man. Not just him, but Palin, and the ads.

He's a worthless piece of shit.

and that he was a decent man, you could definetly see he was ashamed of himself. Unlike Palin, he seems aware of when he's crossed the line. Which sort of makes it worse. He knows what he's doing is wrong, but is doing it anyway.

25. I really think he has lost control of his own campaign
I think he wanted Lieberman (or Ridge) for VP but was talked out of it and pressured into taking Palin.

I also think he wanted to run an honest campaign, but has resorted to the worst kind of nasty politics (encouraged by the far RW radio nuts) when he realized he was losing big time. Probably under pressure from the same folks who discouraged him from taking Lieberman.

26. He owns all of it. He could say no and run a conventional campaign. He could drop out.
No one has made him do this but himself.

I repeat. McCain is a worthless piece of shit. And he has run the most immoral and evil campaign in my lifetime. Worse than Bush by FAR.

In all honesty, screw the old shithead. If this is how he wants to go down, let him have at it. It is not working, the Secret Service has shit under control, and with the current situation we are in, nobody gives a damned about Ayers, a pastor...whatever. The folks who gobble this crap have already gobbled it. No one else fucking cares.

21. Who is the real John McCain?
This one?

To: Campaign Leadership
From: Rick Davis

Subject: McCain Message

Date: 3/11/2008

John McCain is now the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. It is critical, as we prepare to face off with whomever the Democrats select as their nominee, that we all follow John's lead and run a respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people.

Throughout the primary election we saw John McCain reject the type of politics that degrade our civics, and this will not change as he prepares to run head-to-head against the Democratic nominee.

John McCain will continue to run on his principles and will focus on the future of our country. . . .

Overheated rhetoric and personal attacks on our opponents distract from the big differences between John McCain's vision for the future of our nation and the Democrats'. . . .

Throughout his life John McCain has held himself to the highest standards and he will continue to run a respectful campaign based on the issues. . . . ?

Or the one who just now ran the Ayer's ad again on CBS?

23. Again, it's not going to happen, he's in too deep with these heathens!
Basically the fire's gotten too big, too out of control, just like that Disco Sucks rally at Comiskey back in the 70s (here's a DU thread on it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2680269&mesg_id=2682589)

Plus, Cindy herself has tasted some of the chicken blood and gone gris-gris-gumbo-ya-ya over there, talking about "cold chills"; you think SHE'S gonna let him play Mr. Peacemaker? HELL to the NAW!
