PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Steelers may have a bye week, but Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney isn't taking the weekend off.

He campaigned in the Mon Valley today for Senator Barack Obama along with the United Steelworkers.

It's the first time that the Steelers owner ever endorsed a presidential candidate.

"He (Obama) showed that he was a great person and a great leader and a man of integrity," said Rooney.

Rooney was an early supporter of Sen. Obama.

He endorsed the Illinois Democrat prior to the Pennsylvania primary election.

In places like West Mifflin, people are thrilled to meet Dan Rooney up close.

The United Steel Workers are even more thrilled that he's campaigning for Obama.

"The Rooneys are Pittsburgh as far as I'm concerned. I'm very thrilled," said retired steelworker Jean Friday. "I think he's always been on our side."

"Mr. Rooney's commitment to the community is having a great deal of impact on people," said International Steelworkers Union Vice President Fred Redmond, "to see somebody of Mr. Rooney's stature who is supporting Barack Obama."

Current and former Steeler players, like Mike Logan, took part in the rallies.

Logan told the crowd his six year old son became interested in the race, when Logan's mother recently died without health insurance.

Rooney also attended rallies in Uniontown, West Mifflin and McKeesport.
